BSJ issues ackee advisory
Tuesday, 11 May 2010
In what is being seen as an attempt to protect Jamaica's fragile ackee export market, the Bureau of Standards Jamaica has issued an advisory cautioning against the purchase of processed ackees from one local supplier.
In its advisory, the Bureau warned that the St. Elizabeth based company Santa Cruz Processors, in Brae's River is not authorised to process canned ackees for distribution and sale.
The Bureau said a recent surveillance inspection of the establishment revealed that the company was operating in contravention of the Processed Food Act.
A Notice of Detention was issued for seizure of the canned ackees however they were unlawfully removed from the establishment.
The Bureau added that these products are not coded or tested and as such, it cannot guarantee that the ackees are wholesome.
Based on this, the agency says it is unsafe for the products to be consumed and illegal for them to be traded.
Additionally, the Bureau is encouraging the public, particularly retailers and hoteliers, to be on the alert when purchasing canned ackees.
