CTOC (Counter-Terrorism and Organised Crime Investigation Branch ) investigators probing a major extortion ring operating out of Clarendon have identified an inmate at one of Jamaica's correctional facilities as a key player in the racket.
Sources told RJR News that the prisoner, who is serving time at Horizon Adult Remand Centre, is expected to be charged in the case. It's understood that the prisoner made threatening phone calls to business operators in Manchester, Clarendon and St. Catherine.
The Police High Command has given instructions for him to be removed from the facility as they intensify investigations into the case. Five persons, including a woman who is considered the alleged mastermind in the extortion ring in Manchester, have been charged in the racket.
The ring was smashed last month after men travelling in a BMW motorcar were caught distributing extortion letters to business operators in Manchester.
An investigation revealed that business operators in Mandeville, as well as May Pen and Spanish Town, were sent letters instructing them to pay huge sums of money each month to extortionists. They were told that failure to comply would result in their families and employees being killed or their businesses destroyed.
