The Gleaner's Children's Own national spelling bee champion Owayne Rodney has advanced to semi-finals from today’s preliminary rounds of the Scripps National Spelling Bee in Washington, DC, United States.

In round 3, Owayne correctly spelled the word Dword D-R-A-G-O-M-A-N which means, 'an interpreter'.

Forty-nine spellers remain in the competition from the 273 who entered the competition this year.
