<span style="font-weight: bold">Govt moves to unseat Hay-Webster </span>
<span style="font-weight: bold">A sitting member on the Opposition benches in Parliament has been given a week to renounce her United States (US) citizenship.</span>
Sharon Hay-Webster, People’s National Party (PNP) Member of Parliament (MP) for South Central St. Catherine, is being called on to give up her US citizenship before the next weekly sitting of the House of Representatives.
The call has come from Gregory Mair, government MP for North East St. Catherine, who on Tuesday gave notice of a motion demanding that Mrs. Hay-Webster renounce her US citizenship.
“Whereas this member publicly acknowledged in 2009 that she still held US passport, the House invites the Member of Parliament for South Central St. Catherine to renounce immediately, her position as a member of the House in accordance with the rule of law upheld by the ruling of the Court of Appeal,” Mr. Mair said.
Ousting Shahine Robinson
<span style="font-weight: bold">Last year, Mr. Mair was deemed ineligible to sit in Parliament because he had Venezuelan citizenship</span>.
<span style="font-weight: bold">Daryl Vaz, West Portland MP and Michael Stern, MP for North West Clarendon, were also unseated as the controversy over their dual citizenship played out</span>.
<span style="font-style: italic">However all three government MPs were re-elected in subsequent by-elections.</span>
Last week, the PNP went to court to have Shahine Robinson, government MP for North East St. Ann, ousted because she had failed to provide the court with declarations on her own citizenship within the stipulated time.
<span style="font-style: italic">On Sunday, Mrs Hay-Webster announced her intention not to represent her South Central St. Catherine seat in the next general elections, relinquishing her chairmanship of the constituency in the process</span>.
