Say let's get back to the Old Spice commercial...now for me, they kinda stepped outside of the box because they used a black man as a universal sex symbol for a product that historically has more white than black appeal. WHen I was growing up no self respecting black guy would be caught DEAD wearing old spice (though I know this is the body wash, not the cologne). Black guys were wearing Hai Karate or something.
NOw "our" men tend to use body washes that mirror their cologne choice, like they get the men's whatever that goes with their (usually expensive) cologne choice....the soap on a rope, the whole line....lotion whatever.
So analysing this commerical it's a cross over thing...they are assuming that this man could have universal appeal...also the target audience IS the women, who traditionally do the shopping for the family, therefore would be more likely to throw this product in the basket IF the commerical works.
