TOORISM the gulf and the oil spill

Saw a little story on the news this morning about a lovely family owned Oyster Bar restaurant on the gulf that will soon be no more. First they have had to deal with the rise in price of their product, now the fact that that product may well just go away.

This would be one of the many many places that depends solely on the goodwill of tourism and tourists to exist. They also stated that NONE of their claims to BP for compensation have ben recognized or acknowledged even.

WOW.... what a revelation for Merika....tourism based businesses if your tourists go away (for whatever reason), you are F'd. Let's take this a step further......BP stands for BRISISH Petroleum.... a BRITISH company....in other words FARRRRRRRRIN brought alla this misery ultimately to MY country....GEE starting to soung familiar huh.....


Or is the right to complain about this the exclusive property of just SOME people????

Ah the parallel is sooooooooooooo rich...WE asked for this, WE need the oil too., WE profit as well, higher up politicians made the decision to allow drilling in the middle of the water against the advice of enviromentalits. WE are competely dependent on oil. The foreign entity is running the show with the complicity of my government. Things have gone badly (as in the MANY ills of Jamaican tourism pointed out on this board)... my my looks like what goes around comes around don't...

Yep thats one way of looking at it.. And it is understandable given the perpensity for the world to blame every one but themselves for their own incompetence..


In 2000 British Petroleum merged with two companies ARCO and AMACO... These two constiuted 30% of the company then called BP AMACO... No is lie me a tell!!! They then changed the name to BP which stood for Beyond Petroleum... BP then had a smaller merger with a Russian company called TNK to form a entity called TNK BP.. This constitutes another 40 % of a the BP entity... They changed the name to BP.....

So what we have is a Russian-Yanki British company.....So blame the british...!!!!

Green Canyon block was first aquired by ARCO I believe...But I could be wrong.. The company that operates the Macondo well is a yanki entity.... The block is operated by BP their joint venture partners are Anadarko...who owns 25 percent.. Matsui that is owns anotehr 10 %.. but it is easy to ignore facts and get a scape goat.. Blame the British... It is so easier to address the facts...

BP followed the rules... to the letter of the law.. Unfortunately no one wants to address the fundamental issue that the MMS who issued the licence were incompetent and had a conflict of interest.. granting licence and overseeing safety and granting dispensation...

Blame the British... Under US law oil companies are liable for only 75 million.. What does the &quot;British Petroleum* do ??? Hide behind the liability cap...

No BP stood up and said <span style="font-weight: bold">we will pay every legitimate claim</span>... what we had was a yanki female congress complain her state only got 25 million of the 37 million they demand...

The honourable yanki company whos equipment seems to have failed did that hide behind the 75 million liability limit ... Transocean... oops they are not yanki they have a Swiss business address....In order to avvoid a 3 day audit on their rigs, they only had a 4 hour audit and that was deemed acceptable by the MMS..

It the British fault.. So the company that owns the lease is an yanki entity, they have yanki rig superident, they had yanki drilling engineers, they used yanki cement company Halliburton, they used a Yanki Mud Company, yep blame the incompetent british...

Under Marine law.. The person who is responsible for the safety of all people on a vessel is not the hirer of the vessel but the owner of the vessel, ultimately the captain of the vessel...in this case the OIM... Guess he was british.... oops he was yanki..


Oh yes they could do exactly what the honorable yankis did in Bhopal.. Declare bankruptcy

To top it all what idiot accepted the name Macondo the name of the cursed town in 100 years of Solitude.. But I forgot yankis dont read latin american literature..

In 1987 the largest number of humans were killed on an oil rig off shore Aberdeen... My town.. their is a memorial to them in Hazelhead Park... Ooops 167 dead.. The operator was Occidnetal...

what did those horrible britz do.. They had an enquiry and changed the rules under which they operate.. They had a independt ajudicator.. who as the reccomendtation was added to teh safety... Guess they are so stupid that Yanki refused to copy these reccomendation...

Marilyn I think it may be of some interest to note that BP is not entirely a solely british company,the initials &quot;BP&quot; means &quot;beyond petroleum&quot;,and although the company is based in britain it has considerable interest in the US,which is of great benefit not only to the US economy,but to US share holders as well.
I believe also that the company that is directly responsible for the leak are US,but obviously there has been a good deal of buck passing,but there are many companies involved in the catastrophe.

Really.. They should simply pay every single claim without accessing it?????....

And their needs to be proof... legitimate proof .. try getting a penny out of any company for an invoice without the paper work???...if i was BP i would pay simply yhe proven tacable income... Other wise it will be a case of the US goverment shipping pallets of dollars to the Iraq.

BP has to accouint for each dispersment of cash as per the standard acconting procedures otehr wise they will be accused of bribing..

nope not at all what i said. i did not say 'every single claim'.

what i DID say is that BP will weasel out of as much as they can - and that many claims which <span style="font-style: italic">should </span> rightfully be paid, will not be, due to subjective red tape

- and that many ppl who DO actually deserve to be compensated, will instead be SOL.

i <span style="font-weight: bold">am indeed</span>, however, of the opinion that some of the business-as-usual rules &amp; regs should be relaxed, so that these ppl who have been put out of business will have some recourse to pay their bills and feed their families NOW - not waiting til after months of fact-checking have passed, and they then also begin to lose their homes as a direct result of what BP has done.

BP has publicly stated they have nuff money to do everything including spending millions on PR (which shows they still care more about their image than they do about the human lives they destoyed) - so they can well afford to err on the side of good faith, by paying out some immediate damage coverage which may not be possible to &quot;fully&quot; document right now; perhaps on the order of some flat-rate amount for immediate emergency releif for these business-owners. They caused this horror, they can well-afford to possibly lose a few dollars to err on the side of good faith in compensating the people that have been ruined by their callous greedy cavalier disregard for human lives &amp; basic safety.

it makes me f'in SICK to keep hearing this thing spoken of as 'an accident', as if it was some tragic unforeseen freak occurrence. based upon what the workers say, the ones who were there, and saw and heard with their own eyes &amp; ears, in person, what occurred - it was NO accident. it was a completely preventable occurence that would never have happened, had basic safety measures been adhered to, with regarding to holding down the pressure in the well. i agree with the employee's lawywer who says it was criminal negligence.
