WEST BLOOMFIELD, Mich. - A West Bloomfield family is stunned to find a not-so-friendly letter from a neighbor. The racially charged letter put the homeowner on edge.
His seven-year-old son went out to their West Bloomfield mailbox at Greenbriar and Pocono Drive and brought the mail into dad. One letter made dad freeze.
"I think it is racism out here. I do believe that," said homeowner William Harris.
The letter reads, "You people are bringing down the value of this neighborhood. You are no longer in Detroit. Even though you are renting the home, you can still take pride in how it looks on the outside. Car seats do not belong on the front porch nor does all of the crap that you have placed outside of your garage. Have your lazy son put these items in the garage where they belong. (The N word) like you need to stay in Detroit with all of the other trash that lives there. Take a note from your black neighbors across the street and keep up the property instead of tearing it down. Putting curtains to the window would be nice also. We are tired of looking at your (expletive) in that empty house. The neighborhood will celebrate when you are evicted!"
William Harris, who is married with two kids, does not rent. He bought his house when he was 18 in 2004. He owns his own cleaning company. His wife works at Henry Ford West Bloomfield. He says he likes and gets along with his neighbors at the Shenandoah Golf Course neighborhood near Maple and Drake.
"Actually I had the police come here today and I made a report about it because what I first did, I wanted to go and find out who it was, but I didn't want to stoop down to their level. So, I had the police come out here today, check it out. They told me to go to the post office tomorrow," said Harris.
West Bloomfield Police took a report. The post office may also investigate.
No one signed the letter, which was mailed. The return address is bogus.
"There's no reason for racism to still go on. It's 2010. Everyone should be getting along. I get along with all my neighbors. I thought they got along with me," Harris said.
Harris said he wants an apology and that no one is scaring him. He's not leaving the neighborhood.
