How effective is a crime consultation without the police?
That is the question being asked by many who attended the Crime forum in Montego Bay last evening which was staged by Opposition spokesman on crime Peter Bunting.
No one from the Area One police hierarchy was visible last night.
But that did not deter Youth Crime Watch Director Alan Bernard from lashing out at them.
He declared that 'respect begets respect' and the police should begin displaying more to the youths.
“The police, who are not here, research has shown that the only thing young people want to cooperate with you, and we have corroborated this information with other data, is simply respect,” Mr. Bernard said.
He conceded that while many youths are in gangs, others walk in groups out of fear of attacks, including abuse from the police.
Policy makers did not escape criticism either, as they were accused of establishing a National Youth Portfolio that lacked substance and research.
He says once that is in place things will start looking up as statistics show that many youths are in gangs not for economic gain, but due to the absence of meaningful social engagement.
He says foot soldiers for crime lords earn less than a man who washes a car windscreen,
but for the young and unemployed, it is something to do.
