Assistant Commissioner of Police for Area Three Kingsley Robinson is raising concern about the number of detainees being housed in lock-ups in the police division.
ACP Robinson has said the problem of overcrowding was particularly bad in police lock-ups at the May Pen and Mandeville stations.
ACP Robinson said cells in Mandeville which were designed to house 27 people are now accommodating 78 and the condition in May Pen is worse.
The area three head said he has written to Commissioner of Police Owen Ellington seeking an urgent intervention in the matter.
“The cells, the accommodation for prisoners, is bursting at the seams. I would like to think it is as good a time as any to put it on the table for discussion. It is my humble opinion that in 2010, in the cause of nation building all of us would put our hands to the wheel until we are satisfied that the task is overcome,” ACP Robinson said.
ACP Robinson's comments come a few days after five prisoners escaped from the Mandeville police lock-up in Manchester.
The police have since caught two of the men while three others are still at large.
