THE operators of On-the-Ground Publications and Communications, a locally registered company owned by businessman and People's National Party activist Paul Burke, has distanced itself from the popular Facebook page On the Ground News Reports.
In a release to the media, Burke said the two were separate entities.
"For the record and as a matter of fact, there is no connection whatsoever, either directly or in directly between On-the-Ground Publications and Communications and On-the-Ground News in spite of the somewhat similarity in names. On-the-Ground Publications and Communications has absolutely no control over the use of the name by On-the Ground News, nor have we provided any support or opposition to this Face Book Page. We do not know who is responsible for establishing it," the release stated.
The On the Ground News Reports Facebook page has gained more than 25,000 fans, following its coverage of the ongoing Christopher 'Dudus' Coke saga and broke new ground for citizen journalism in Jamaica, with users sharing and discussing reports.
In the last two months the website jamaicaobserver.com was bombarded with web traffic making it the most popular Jamaican website among Jamaican online users according to online rating website Alexa.com.
Jamaicans have also began using Twitter in increasing numbers with tweets about 'Dudus' even being referenced in the New York Times.
According to Digital Marketing Strategist Ingrid Riley, the increasing use of the Internet is a further demonstration that Jamaicans have always been in tune with global trends.
"It mirrors what's happening globally since 52 per cent of Jamaicans are online and use the internet. We have 100 per cent penetration of mobile devices. Twitter is the perfect platform for mobile devices. It provides short, fitful bursts of information that can be sent out and shared. It follows the explosion of Jamaicans who have been using Facebook," Riley told the Observer.
