AN American nurse who tried to smuggle four-and-a-half pounds of cocaine to New York in a suit bag, was yesterday sentenced to two years in prison and fined $800,000 when she appeared in the Corporate Area Resident Magistrate's Court.
Thirty-nine-year-old Paulette Pryce of Connecticut, who was arrested at the Norman Manley International Airport on June 7, was sentenced by Resident Magistrate Judith Pusey when she pleaded guilty to drug charges.
According to police reports, Pryce checked in at the airport and was being searched when the ion scan machine detected the drug in a suit bag she was carrying in her hands.
The bag was also searched and a false compartment was discovered in the bottom of the bag containing narcotic substance. Pryce was then arrested and charged.
Yesterday, Pryce's attorney Anthony Pearson begged the magistrate not to give her the maximum sentence.
However, in addition to the two-year sentence, the nurse was fined $200,000 or six months for possession of cocaine, $250,000 or six months for dealing in cocaine and $350,000 or six months for taking steps to export cocaine.
If the fines are not paid, Pryce will serve a further six months in prison.
