According to the Bible, in the days of old, 'the diaspora' - played a major part in the building of their nations. For example, Nehemiah, Ezra, Daniel and Joseph were men who walked the walk and talked the talk! They brought reformation to their country. Today, we have not seen the true relevance of the diaspora in the nation! In fact, based on what we are seeing today, the diaspora seems to exist for the purpose of profiling and is rife with hidden motives and political agendas.
If all those who are a part of the diaspora were giving 10 per cent of their time and resources to the nation, Jamaica would be a better place. They must not forget the favour of God upon their lives and the price their parents and foreparents paid that allow them to be where they are today - Deuteronomy 8:18 - "And you shall remember the Lord your God, for it is He who gives you power to get wealth, that He may establish His covenant which He swore to your fathers, as it is this day."
Some of our foreparents went to England, Panama, and other countries and made serious sacrifices for their families and, in fact, for their nation, because they were sowing the seed of their labour and time in other nations that we may benefit!
When God gives access to high and influential places, if that access is not being used to build and help others, then after a while, access will be denied! We should take example from the Jews and the Chinese - wherever they are, they help one another!
Examples Of What The Diaspora Needs To Do
Those in the legal field should be giving at least 10 per cent of their time, working along with local authorities to help the poor to get justice. For example, they need to work to implement seven crime bills for those of the rich, who remain untouchable, so that there will be justice and accountability for all! Many of the decision makers are among those who are untouchable. Look at the fact that many poor people pay lawyers to defend them but these lawyers don't show up at court, and there is no accountability for the fees to be repaid to those who they failed to represent.
Doctors in the diaspora should be actively setting up clinics in poorer communities so that proper optical, dental and health facilities are available, and give 10 per cent of their time to these clinics. They need to actively seek and acquire grants for medication for these areas and also have a strong exchange programme for medical students so that overseas students can work along with local doctors to transform communities.
Scientists in the diaspora can set up a research centre for carrying out studies to find hidden resources in the nation - plants, bushes, oil and gold. They need also to give scholarships to locals wishing to study abroad to become botanists, environmentalists, geoscientists, and other such disciplines but lack the resources.
Those in business need to set up genuine humanitarian organisations, working with non-government organisations, the Church and civic organisations, as well as fund programmes, homework centres and skills-training centres. They need to lobby for duty-free items such as computers and books. They should also offer scholarships to students studying in the area of business.
They need to lobby for our sportsmen and women to be treated better; that there be scholarships, a special fund, insurance coverage and even retirement plans and funds to help them survive, rather than having a function to honour them in one night, then forgetting them until they win the next race - or we will lose them to other countries! There needs to be
ongoing training for the sportsmen and women in other areas so that when they leave the sport or retire, they can do other things to maintain a good living - having contributed so significantly to their country.
The diaspora must be more effective in our nation.
