Black LI Man Goes To Prison For Killing White Teen
John White Surrenders After Losing Appeal
A black Long Island homeowner convicted of killing a white teenager during a group confrontation has surrendered to begin his prison term.
Family and friends of 56-year-old John White thanked his supporters Thursday as the Miller Place man surrendered to begin serving a 2 to 4 year manslaughter prison sentence now that he lost his appeals.
"I appreciate all of my supporters," his wife, Sonya Young said. "This goes across all racial lines."
It was back in 2007 that White was convicted of shooting Daniel Cicciaro of Selden in a racially charged incident. The 17-year-old and his friends went to White's home looking for White's son who they mistakenly believed had threatened to rape a girl they knew.
Just minutes after John White surrendered to begin his sentence, the Cicciaro family said they felt little closure.
"It will never be over," said Joanne Ciciarro, Daniel's mother. "No amount of time will bring my son back. I miss him very much. At least I am happy he is seeing consequences."
Lawyers for White say he shot the teen in self-defense. Prosecutors argued White should have stayed inside his home and waited for police.
John White's wife says her family is strong.
"I am thankful, I am blessed," she said. "My husband is blessed. We will get through this as we did for four years."
The White family would not discuss any possible future lawsuits they are considering... Mrs. White says she has reported several threats made against her family in the last few months... But she would not elaborate.
