Commissioner of Customs, Danville Walker. Jamaica Customs made 52 arrests last year and 12 so far this year of persons attempting to evade the payment of import duties.
Under the Customs Act, Customs Officers have the power of arrest.
Commissioner of Customs, Danville Walker says the <span style="font-weight: bold">department has taken a tougher stance by arresting more perpetrators and hauling them before the courts.</span>
“<span style="font-weight: bold">This Commissioner won't be mitigating those offences anymore. Once brought before the court and found guilty, that individual has a criminal record </span>and…the penalty they will pay,” Mr. Walker said.
Mr. Walker adds that the new system has also resulted in the department seizing $150 million from persons bringing in more cash than legally allowed through the country's two airports over the last two years.
