Dancehall/reggae veteran Sugar Minott is said to be gravely ill, as doctors have reportedly diagnosed him with Angina Pectoris, a heart condition where there is a severe chest pain caused by lack of blood and oxygen supply to the heart muscle, which is generally due to obstruction or spasm of the heart’s blood vessels (via Wikipedia). He is now resting under doctor’s supervision, and Dancehall.Mobi wishes him a speedy recovery.

As a result of his medical condition, Minott is not able to travel at this time, and will not be performing tonight at ‘Kingston Class Reunion‘ in Toronto, Canada; but the show will go on, and he has asked his daughter Tamar Minott (who is also a performer) to perform his catalogue.

looking tru mi pictures i find it hard to believe dat he is gone....especially looking at his birthday show couple years bak in NY...all the pioneers of the music came tru to give respect to Sugar and of course it was his due....

KINGSTON, Jamaica — Sugar Minott, a smooth-voiced singer and producer who helped to popularize reggae music, has died. He was 54.

Minott died yesterday at the University Hospital of the West Indies in Jamaica's capital, Kingston, his wife Maxine Stowe said today. She did not disclose the cause of death.

Two months ago, Minott had cancelled performances in Canada after suffering chest pains.

Born in Kingston in May 1956, the singer, whose real name was Lincoln Barrington Minott, launched his musical career as a youngster in the late 1960s as a member of the African Brothers reggae trio.

He started a successful solo career in the 1970s, gaining a following in Jamaica's dancehalls with songs like Vanity and Mr DC while recording for the famed Studio One, the Caribbean island's first black-owned music studio.

In 1981, he had his biggest hit with a cover of the Jackson Five's Good Thing Going, which reached No 4 in the United Kingdom's singles chart in March of that year.

Minott was known for nurturing young talent with his own Black Roots record label and Youthman Promotion company. Reggae and dancehall artists such as Junior Reid and Tenor Saw began their careers under his tutelage.

&quot;Sugar Minott was a man who gave a lot of strength to the music although he got no love from the business,&quot; Reid said.

<span style="font-weight: bold">A new album from Minott, New Day, is scheduled to be released in coming weeks.</span>
Stowe said funeral arrangements had not yet been made.

He contributed alot to our economy.... He was a positive effect on Jamaica.... Note I am not that big a fan.... But his efforts are not to be minimised. and he should be celebrated.
