Why Not Having Black Women On “The Ultimate Catch” Is A Catch-22

VH1’s new dating reality show The Ultimate Catch premiered this week with much anticipation by many viewers. The show’s bachelor and NFL superstar, Chad Ochocinco, recently outraged many when an insider leaked information revealing Ochocinco did not want Black women on his dating show.

While his alleged actions can be seen as betrayal of Black woman; ideally, is there a positive alternative?

I pose this question, with my primary focus on past VH1 shows like Flavor of Love, which was criticized for it’s devaluation and commodification of Black women, as well as it’s negative representations of Black women. VH1’s dating shows traditionally have exploited money-hungry women, who are willing to “ho” themselves on television in hopes of their “15 minutes of fame”.

I am in no way defending either position, but am rather criticizing the critics themselves. Ochocinco cannot possibly be faulted in his decision of a winner or date of this reality show, but rather should be faulted for agreeing to do a VH1 dating show.

There are two possible scenarios I can mock-up for a dating show involving a Black professional athlete; a group of Black women vie for the attention of an All-Star athlete by acting like groupies, or secondly, there is a group of women accompanied by few token Black girls, who vie for an All-Star athletes attention, and you guessed it– they all look like groupies.

The mission of The Ultimate Catch is not to choose a future CEO, Miss America, or the First Woman President of the United States– why is Ochocinco meeting such harsh criticism?

I understand and support the need to defend the under-represented, but it may be possible that the critics have lost sight of the big picture. When we start complaining about not enough Black women in a VH1 dating show, or not enough dark-skinned women shaking their butts in rap videos, we may need to re-evaluate our views.

For all intents and purposes, Chad Ochocinco is…well…. a little ridiculous and ignorant. He represents the exact opposite of what ALARM stands for, since he presents exactly the kind of minstrel show that white America has always asked black men to become. With a big mouth full of metal, Chad reminds us of just how often black male athletes waste valuable platforms engaging in ridiculous and counter-productive behavior. Yes, Chad graduated from college, but as a professor, I can tell you that graduating doesn’t mean you were actually educated.

His most interesting action this week was when he chose only two black women to date on his new Vh-1 reality show. In fact, there are reports from an insider stating that he wanted to replace the black women with white and hispanic women who were extras. If these reports are true, they are certainly disturbing. This is not to say that Ochocinco (yes, the name change from “Chad Johnson” was stupid to me) doesn’t have a right to love who he wants. But he reminds us of all the other athletes who seem to avoid black women like the plague, always placing them second fiddle. His consistent rejection of the women who raised him is likely a reflection of his own internal self-hatred.

Ochocinco will be the man for a while, but his shelf-life was short from the minute he stepped onto the field. At the age of 32, he’s nearing retirement, and he has unfortunately shown us that his physical gifts are the most valuable asset he possesses. Unless there are additional auditions for “Dancing with the Stars,” Chad’s own star will fizzle, and he will disappear into mediocrity at best, and perhaps poverty. At that point, all the black women who adored him when he was younger will thank their lucky stars that he was never interested in them in the first place.

The buffoonery should end in professional sports. Black male athletes must be men, not walking cartoon characters. Our primary objective in life should not be to make ourselves into a laughing stock for others.

Chad "Ocho Cinco" Johnson: No Black Girls On My Dating Show!

The drama with Chad "Ocho Cinco" Johnson's VH1 reality dating show has already begun. They started filming "The Ultimate Catch" very recently, and we received an interesting letter from a contestant who has already been sent home.

Apparently, Mr. Ocho Cinco is not a fan of having black girls on his show. We received emails from both a contestant and an employee of the production company stating that Chad is demanding that all the black girls be "cut", except for 1. He wants to keep the Latina and brunette white girls who he says are "better" for him.

Here's the email we received from one of the contestants Chad conveniently sent home early on after she made Top 30:

I am an avid reader of YBF and was recently selected as one of the final 85 for Chad's )OchoCinco) dating reality show. Long story short, Chad has identity issues and primarily chose Latinas and white girls (mostly brunette's). Many of the black girls were eliminated right off the back (including Rabbit from Real Chance of Love)<-- might I add Cali made a cameo as well. I managed to make top 30 before getting eliminated.

The entire day was unorganized and Chad only wanted to do things his way; he wouldn't listen to producers and all selections were made by him only. In the beginning Chad walked the field and immediately began to dismiss girls, he later called a group of ten girls (including myself) up to the front and told us to "not worry you're not going anywhere.." Shortly after he directed us to do a quick warm up lap (at the Rose Bowl in Pasadena, CA). This warm up lap turned into chaos, lap after lap producer's were unsure of what to do next so they directed girls to keep running. Luckily, I stay with a personal trainer, so I ran a total of 6 laps before I stopped for water. Some girls began to hyperventalate, while others began to walk. One by one, Chad starting pulling black girls aside and telling them "bye." During my stop for a cup of water, Chad called me over along with a group of six girls; 5 black and 1 white. He then said "umm... you guys are eliminated... uh.. yea--yea eliminated--Except for you." And guess who he pulled out the group? The white girl.

Long story short, Chad is intimidated by a successful black woman. And this so-called competition definitely wasn't based off of looks or class. **I'm Just Sayin**

Just wanted to give you the scoop.

P.S. I am a YBF chick of Carribean decent.

Well damn. We also received this other email from a member of the production staff. Apparently this production person is sending the email around to many sites so they must be really trying to put him on blast:

Hey Theybf-
I'm a big fan of yours!!! I wanted to give you the inside scoop from Chad Ochocinco's new reality show the "Ultimate Catch". Long story short...i'm employed by the company that is producing the reality show. The show just started filming yesterday.

Now, when you watch the show it's going to appear as if he had to narrow down 84 girls to 17! In reality 17 girls were pre-selected by the producers and flown to LA a week prior to do interviews and photo shoots for the show. The other 67 girls on set were extras filling in.

When Chad arrived on set yesterday, he saw a mixed variety of nationalities that the producers had already pre-selected...five black girls, 5 spanish girls, 6 white girls, and a girl of middle eastern decent. He seemed rather upset and acted irritated. The producer felt that that he was unhappy and after talking to them off air, Chad wanted to revise the list of the pre-selected girls. He wanted to send home all of the Black girls and replace them with some of the Caucasian and Hispanic girls who were actually extras on set.

After not having picked any Black girls to remain on the show the producers pressured him into picking at least two. Chad, in turn, chooses the two most GHETTO girls there to represent the us. And by ghetto...you know the ones cause black men to say that's the reason they don't date black women anymore.

It's really sad to see a man who has entirely black family, including beautiful black children would have such low regard for black women. I've heard stories about his preference in the past but never in a million year would I think he would make it that obvious, especially knowing that his tv show is not exactly catering to the white folks...

Chad has commented on Twitter that "certain girls" are mad they got sent home and he says he's colorblind. But if even 1/4 of this ish is true, get over yourself Chad. Not the black women need your approval in order to feel "worthy", but if this is what you're teaching your own black daughters, that ish is not a good look. Just sayin'...

ESSENCE.com: Your show "Ochocinco: The Ultimate Catch" premiered on Sunday and you've caught a lot of flack because you only chose two Black women. How do you feel about that?
OCHOCINCO: I don't understand why. Those who know me didn't think twice about it because they already know how I am. I deal with all types of women. My mind set is that I think outside the box. I'm all over the place and I want to experience everything. There's nothing wrong with [Black women] at all. If I did it the way they wanted though, there still would have been something to fuss about. It's a lose-lose for me because no matter how I do it, there's going to be an argument. I did Wendy Williams yesterday and I said for those who are offended about it, I apologize. But if you ever run into me, you'd date me.

ESSENCE.com: Are you surprised that Black women feel the way they do about your show?
OCHOCINCO: I can't do anything about that. I've never heard other races complaining about their men dating outside of their race besides Black people. I hate that we continue to pull that race card. Experience life in general. It's not that there's not enough of us because I'm going to deal with y'all anyway, I always have. [People] make it an issue because it's now on camera.

ESSENCE.com: Can you understand where some Black women are coming from?
OCHOCINCO: Yeah, but I still can't appease you. I have a preference. I'm not trying to appease you on my show. I'm trying to find happiness for me and it doesn't come from just dealing with one type of woman.

ESSENCE.com: What is your "preference"?
OCHOCINCO: Black, White, Chinese, I don't care what you are. If you put a smile on my face, I don't want much. I want somebody who is fun, has a personality and can cook and take me to McDonald's. Keep your nails and your feet done, and we're good to go. You have to have a personality like me. Someone fun and outgoing, passionate about life in general, a go-getter with a sense of humor. Beautiful is okay, but I've dealt with beautiful women so many times before and they had nothing else to offer. I need more than that.

ESSENCE.com: Why did you choose to do "The Ultimate Catch" and what are you getting out of it?
OCHOCINCO: I'm single for one, and I don't have anyone. The opportunity came about to do it. and I was like 'why not?' I haven't been successful at dating so I thought why not try something different. I might find someone, I might not.

ESSENCE.com: You're Ochocinco, why is it hard for you to find a good date?
OCHOCINCO: There's a saying: "Just because you have money doesn't mean you're happy." Just because I'm Ocho doesn't mean I'm supposed to have a woman either.

ESSENCE.com: Have you ever thought about changing the kind of women that are around you?
OCHOCINCO: I've dealt with all types. I've dealt with normal women who aren't in the spotlight, I've dealt with celebrities, supermodels, regulars, video girls. I've been there.

ESSENCE.com: Is your lifestyle ready for a relationship though?
OCHOCINCO: Yes because my lifestyle needs somebody to complete everything I have going on. As much as I have going on, I have nobody to share it with.

ESSENCE.com: So tell us, are you really half Mexican?
OCHOCINCO: It's a joke. I am from the hood. Liberty City [Miami] to be exact.

let's face it...
black professional athletes are very drawn to 'other' women...

or repulsed by the very sight of black women

i've noticed that black athletes with black wives seems to be the minority;

I know too many professional athletes and for the most part these guys are kids. Most ah dem go to college, but neva learn nutten while dem was there and never finish dem degree. Most ah dem have been spoiled (through HS and in college) to never hear "No" and that most tings is negotiable (as long as you keep people chattin' you, therefore keeping up di interest). I don't know if I would want my daughter to marry a professional athlete. What these kids do to woman is shameful. I am not saying older athletes do not do the same, I am just speaking from my observation.

I notice that the "groupies" do their best to get pregnant and they do so almost immediately that way they have an "in" with the guy. The more kids they produce the better. Many of these kids (athletes) have fiances (the save face/ask mi no questions terminology for Baby Momma) and have them for years.

The guys that I know have:
- 2 "black books" one with the numbers for "home" girls, the other with "away" girls.
- these guys take care of there kids (and well I might add) and the groupies are totally OK with the arrangements, b/c they get to spend the kid's money that daddy sends.
-the girl (depending on the week and if the game is away or home) usually fly in a day or two before the game. they know the routine as far as hotel/house, location to pick up keys and car, which place to pick up new outfits and get hair/nails done.
- after the game (the rest of the team) know the protocol. each locker room have a "family wait area". team mates know to say hello and wait for the teammate to "introduce" (usually to remind them of the chic's name)
- player takes chic to dinner and then back to hotel/home...they have sex and then he takes her back to airport next morning, as team meeting/drug testing/etc. commences the morning after the game.

Chadchincocinqo (ah mi mispronounce im name on purpose) ah no eediat. Him know already that im not gwine play fi much longer. him know daht to mek di transition to after im tenure wid di NFL im haffi mek people say im name. im haffi keep fi im name inna di headlines. Unfortunately, what di most ah dem know to do is to play poppyshow. Look at dem interview weh Blue post. Di man nu say anyting substantive atall. Nuttin concrete. Daht mean what? Oh mi know...people will continue seek im out "fi clarification", people will tune in to im show fi see what it's about (even if is to chat im more), dem will google im, etc. the cycle continue....sigh...

Him is a poppyshow indeed.

Mi blieve seh im nu like imself, but not for di reasons insinuated by the posts in this thread. im a play di game...unfortunately, is wi (as a race) weh lose in di end.
