THREE men were fatally shot by the police during a gun battle along the Norman Manley Boulevard, Negril, Westmoreland this morning.
Two illegal firearms were also seized following the incident.
The dead men, who have not yet been identified, are believed to be in their early twenties and thirties.
Police report that about 12:30 am, the police were on foot patrol in Negril when four men were seen sitting on a bench in the vicinity of a resort, behaving in a suspicious manner. When the men were accosted, they pulled guns and fired at the police. The police took evasive action, returned the fire and a gun battle ensued.
The gunmen ran in different directions.
After the shooting, a search of the area was done and two of the thugs were found with gunshot wounds. One was clutching a homemade double-barreled shotgun containing one twelve gauge cartridge and the other, a .38 revolver.
An adjoining premises was also searched and the third man, who was found hiding, chopped at a member of the team with a machete and was shot. The weapons were retrieved and all three taken to Savannah-la-mar Hospital where they died. One member of the police party received minor injuries and was treated and released.
The Bureau of Special Investigations is investigating.
