In it, Sherrod seemed to boast of having withheld from a white farmer some measure of aid that she would have given to a black farmer.

It looked like a clear case of black racism in action. Within hours, Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack had forced her to resign. The NAACP, under attack from the right for having denounced racism in the tea party movement, issued a statement blasting Sherrod and condemning her attitude as unacceptable.

But Breitbart had overstepped. The full video of Sherrod's speech showed she wasn't bragging about being a racist, she was telling what amounted to a parable about prejudice and reconciliation. For one thing, the incident happened in 1986 when she was working for a nonprofit, long before she joined the Obama administration. For another, she helped that white man and his family save their farm, and they became friends. Through him, she said, she learned to look past race toward our common humanity.

In effect, she was telling the story of America's struggle with race, but with the roles reversed. For hundreds of years, black people were enslaved, oppressed and discriminated against by whites -- until the civil rights movement gave us all a path toward redemption.

With the Obama presidency, though, has come a flurry of charges -- from the likes of Breitbart but also from more substantial conservative figures -- about alleged incidences of racial discrimination against whites by blacks and other minorities. Recall, for example, the way Obama's critics had a fit when he offered an opinion about the confrontation between Harvard professor Henry Louis Gates Jr. and a white police officer. Remember the over-the-top reaction when it was learned that Justice Sonia Sotomayor had once talked about how being a &quot;wise Latina&quot; might affect her thinking.

Newt Gingrich called Sotomayor a racist. He was lightning-quick to call Sherrod a racist, too. I'd suggest that the former House speaker consider switching to decaf, but I think he knows exactly what he's doing.

These allegations of anti-white racism are being deliberately hyped and exaggerated because they are designed to make whites fearful. It won't work with most people, of course, but it works with some -- enough, perhaps, to help erode Obama's political standing and damage his party's prospects at the polls.

Before Sherrod, the cause celebre of the &quot;You Must Fear Obama&quot; campaign involved something called the New Black Panther Party. Never heard of it? That's because it's a tiny group that exists mainly in the fevered imaginations of its few members. The Sherrod case has fully exposed the right-wing campaign to use racial fear to destroy Obama's presidency, and I hope the effect is to finally stiffen some spines in the administration. The way to deal with bullies is to confront them, not run away. Yet Sherrod was fired before even being allowed to tell her side of the story. She said the official who carried out the execution explained that she had to resign immediately because the story was going to be on Glenn Beck's show that evening. Ironically, Beck was the only Fox host who, upon hearing the rest of Sherrod's speech, promptly called for her to be reinstated. On Wednesday, Vilsack offered to rehire her.

Shirley Sherrod stuck to her principles and stood her ground. I hope the White House learns a lesson.

The media is right wing. Fox is at or near the top of the heap for network news because the people of the United States are so dumbed-down that they actually watch Fox and believe most of what they say.

It is dangerous for people who don't know much about how the government works, or how little difference there is between the two parties to get their information from Fox but that's what they do.

It is IMPOSSIBLE to have a good idea of what the United States is and what it does if you get your news from any network news program including Puiblic Televison.

It should be no surprise that the Obama administration pays attention to what Fox says or what right wing extremists like Rush Limbaugh and Glenn Beck say because those people are the ones that the voters listen to and believe.

The vast majority of the people of the United States have a very twisted understanding of things. A lot of what they believe is deliberate misinformation (disinformation).

They do not take the time it takes to check into the facts because its boring.
They would rather believe the gossip and rumors because they are so exciting and hold their limited attention span.

The United States is not a nation of intellectuals.
The U.S. has an average of a 5th grade reading and comprehension level.

The government knows that and has to play to that moronic audience to survive.

Think of the government as a TV station.
It can put on Shakespeare or &quot;American Idol&quot;.
It has to put on &quot;American Idol&quot; because that is the highest level people can deal with.
It also prefers that people prefer &quot;American Idol&quot;
It makes them so much easier to control

I don't hold with the &quot;blacks are racist too&quot; argument that people spout off when we discuss injustice and demand justice, as if holding a prejudice - which we all do - justifies hundreds of years of slavery, lynching, Jim Crow, discrimination, etc.

Still, Breitbart may have rendered a service to all thinking black people so that their eyes may be opened to the risks and dangers of &quot;making do&quot; and compromising what is right.

BTW, there's a line of thinking that says Breitbart timed his attack and chose the victim to influence Congress to not vote for funding the settlement due to black farmers for years of discrimination by the same Agriculture Dept. that fired Sherrod.

In July, the House approved a war supplemental bill that included money to pay for the settlement. It now remains stuck as senators examine the bill.

The 1997 Pigford v. Glickman case against the U.S. Agriculture Department was settled out of court 11 years ago. Under a federal judge's terms dating to 1999, qualified farmers could receive $50,000 each to settle claims of racial bias.

Because they were mostly black, Breitbart used every trick in the book including fake prostitutes to be photographed among the workers to discredit them and caused the withdrawal of their Federal funding...
