usa patois - does ms sherrod speak it?

okay i'm have to put this out there - it's been on my mind
and the cnn interview made me want to talk about it more

so sherrod had her terrible time this week

but during the speech i heard her speaking with her southern accent then without then again tonight her southern accent - when talking to the "white farmer" she was almost indecipherable

is ebonics alive and well in america? or this was just southern speak . . .

i'm going to try and post some videos for example like: naacp speech - ebonics - TV "tour" this week - english with that soft southern drawl (too slow for the " sound bites" most of the news networks want - and then with the farmer

so do you speak differently at different times - why?
is it race/culture/timing/time/place?

yes I speak differently to different people. It was cultural for me. Speaking with a jamaican accent or in patois with caribbean folks. Speaking american english with the americans and a mixture in between when speaking with the UK folks.

Goal is to be understood by the parties with whom I am conversing I guess.

I think we are ingrained early -- think &quot;You can speak to your friends that way but not your parents&quot;

i pretty much talk the same to everyone

i'm too old to care anymore

and abu is on lockdown for the weekend for speaking to his parent &quot;like that&quot;

but i really want some time with him - so we'll go to the beach, eat out, take sheba to the dog park - but he's on punishment - and has to hang with mom

and he doesn't have an iPhone

so you speak patois family friends close associates

do you speak english (jamaican taught) at times

do you speak american english - slight differences from british (schedule, windscreen, petrol)

one of friends had a business conversation that lapsed into 3 languages - spanish, english and portugues - she told me that some things were said better - in some languages

I've been here so long (US) i guess i speak american english

I still spell words the english way sometimes. IRL I would correct it...on this board me just mek it stay.

In USA is speak English to the folks at work. I will admit that mi mix up spellings all the while. Bakrah use to mek mi feel a way, now that I teach in the program that I teach in my writing/spelling is encourage

At home...a mix of patlish... although since mommie ahn daddy arrived it has been more patois...at least is suh mi feel as mi get...&quot;whadya say?&quot; from babygirlA ahn di current mr ilp.

My current office is full of accents and I will speak them allllll when mi mind tek mi

One lady from the deep south with one hellovadrawl

One britsh lady who does both cockney and posh

One very proper speaking Trini lady (older)

and one from Mauritious with a heavy french accent. Her attempts at english slang is hilarious

I think Jamaican patois is one of the most colorful , unique &amp; interesting languages I've ever come across!!

Because I've been living a Yaad for five years and have been surrounded by it, it comes quite naturally to me many times....if it doesn't feel right, I don't speak it.....I know I switch back &amp; forth but that is the way my mind is thinking (kind of in a combination of patois &amp; English)

Even though I had traveled to Jamaica nuff in the 80's &amp; 90's, this board was my real introduction to actually see patois in a written form. I think it helped me immensely in conversing here a Yaad.

Yes, I speak differently depending on who I'm speaking to...generally I speak with my British accent, although it's not as strong since I've been living in the US over 20 odd years...but when I'm around British peeps it comes out strong....When I'm around Jamaicans it's a mixture of patois/american/british..I do not speak patois the way I write it on the board....When I'm speaking to strictly Americans....my accent changes slightly to align with their lingo...basically my accent adapts as necessary...
