I knew Harry. Never heard of Ray though.

On some levels, it does bother me when there are institutions that are supposed to be “ours” aren’t represented by us – especially in prime, top, visible positions.

Ideally, it’s not supposed to matter, but we all know that it does – we’re not in color blind world yet.

On a side note - funny thing – I worked at a major cable network for years and years. Our division was moved to LA and our dept dissolved but we all still keep in touch – we were all very close.

One of the crew (melanin challenged) works at BET and she’s a VP.

Our old boss recently had a birthday party and all of the old crew went and so I saw her there. Hadn’t seen her in ages.

The whole night she kept following me around pleading with me to explain to her why it is that I don’t watch BET!

Ok we will on this one .. To bring home a point Yuri, the staff of Essence for the most part is predominantly Black Why would we get in a tissy for one white person being added to the staff. I probably would be on your side if the person they named did not have the credentials . She does. She has a long standing history of being a Fashion Editor/Director

I can’t go into detail about the outlets involved but the week of Obama’s election, I was brought in mid stream to work on a project with a newspaper.

I was the only person of color on the job.

Let’s just call it, The Cleveland Plain Dealer, for purposes of this post.

When it became clear Obama was going to win and the presses were running, mania ensued because it was clear that the next day’s issue was going to sell like hot cakes – and it did.

You couldn’t find a copy to buy withing 100 miles to save your life. People wanted a copy of that issue more than air. I’m sure it was the same all over the country, if not the world.

The next night, after it all settled in, we had the usual pm (post mortem).

Screaming – shouting – heads were getting ready to roll it seemed.

The publisher was furious they’d run short.

I have no doubt – none – that if there was someone of color, more people running the show, or in the show, booking the show, reading the script! – if there was a person of color on that newsroom production team, they’d have made the call for back up presses, more stock, etc, etc.

There’d have been no short.

Any person of color who had breath in their body would know that anything “Obama” would be selling like fire.

We need diversity in the news rooms, the board rooms, the classrooms, the every room in America - ESPECIALLY at the helm of our own institutions.

About 10 years ago (this was before it was taken over by Time Inc) I was offered and almost took a job at Essence Magazine. After spending about 3 days there, making the rounds, consulting on a project, bearing witness to several very telling situations, I declined. I'm so glad I did. </div></div>
