Confirmed: Desmond Panton head of Key Motors was arrested this afternoon and charged for evasion of customs duties and taking steps to defraud the Gov't of duties and taxes, the Customs dep't said its Contraband Enforcement Team (CET) discovered over 50 vehicles amounting to approximately J$40 mil in duty have been illegally removed from the warehouse at Key Motors and unlawfully licensed.(Observer)

HEAD of Key Motors, Desmond Panton was this afternoon arrested and charged with evasion of customs duties and taking steps to defraud the Government of duties and taxes.

The Customs Department has also closed down operations at Key Motors premises on Hagley Park Road in St Andrew.

Panton's arrest came after an audit by the Customs Department of the operations of Key Motors uncovered in a number of discrepancies regarding the evasion of customs duties by releasing vehicles using improper procedures.

In a release to the media today, the department said its Contraband Enforcement Team (CET) discovered over 50 vehicles amounting to approximately J$40 million in duty have been illegally removed from the warehouse at Key Motors and unlawfully licensed.

Panton could be fined J$100 million in penalties if found guilty.
