I dont usually watch this program but I suggest you watch this program.I watched it by chance..s one because of the mention of India... This is a white than white actor who portrays upper echalon english man.. If you can I suggest you watch this::: on the BBC if you have access

Yet in it is a key to colonial history.. One of his ancestors was sent to Allahabad in 1857!!! Here the first step to anti colonial struggle.. in it The Indian uprising.. at the end of which India passed from Johnny Company to a crown colony... There this actor faound out his extemed ancestor commited brutalities equal to Nazis!!!Also there is an indian ooman who reminds me of how I veiw evano!

One aspect that I always was aware.. During the initial East India company rule of India, they encouraged theior recruits from Britian to take wives among the Indians.. Bearing in mind that upper class indians veiwed the british with contempt.. they did so to the extent that they paid their men gold for every child born( That I found out in this program)

This changed once the administration succumbed to the liberal influences of the same peoples who led the anti slavery campaings showwd contempt to indians... These christians showed contempt for the religions of the sub contient.. and showed intolerance to sexual liasons between Indians and white people..

After the rising India was then changed to crown colony..

What this has to do with Yard ???? There was a drive in britian to change the administration from the self governing (by white legisilature (plus George William Gordon ect)

Seen against this light the cruelty and brutality of the The Morant Bay Rebellion.... occured 7 years later...

Rupert wants to know when the Indian connection with his family first started. A trail of documents reveal that his great-great-great-great grandfather, Thomas, was the first Thorne in India. Rupert decides to follow in his footsteps to India. He travels to Allahabad, and discovers that Thomas was involved in the Great Indian Rebellion… but Rupert will have to go back even further if he's to discover the truth.</span>

I was unable to view the clip, and so I am unable to comment on it, as a result I may seem to be all over the place as I try to touch all bases that appear relevant to your post.

It is reputed that several US Presidents has Black blood, and even the royal families of Europe and England in particular.

That Whites should Join the struggle against colonialism, is because they suffered longer and just as bad as Africans under its sway....Tribalism in Europe led to the indenturedship (a euphemism for white slavery) of many Europeans who toiled alongside Afrikans in the fields, This led to much miscegentaion, no one in the New World (or the World) can claim racially pure pedigree.

Thanks for this, Wahalla. I enjoyed RPJ in his role in Spooks - he's so English upper-crust in name and style, it will be interesting to see his reaction to the family skeletons.

He wasnt bad in a remake of The 39 steps either!!!! Loved spooks by the way as well.. amazing they killed every major character bar two! And the series still went on.. great acting..

His reactions were those of a German who discovered their fatehr raped pillaged across Russia during the war ! One of his ancestors by the way organised the Gran Durbar of 1911.... y.. funny though none of his seven generations seemed to have visited Ethopia with Napier...

Unfortunately the debates on the switch from a privately administered colony to that of defacto crown colony as is the case of India or the debates post Morant Bay and the enquiery were before the digital age .. I beleive that it is a not frequent discussion question in A'level or Cape essay question.. the political connections between the Indian uprising and the effects it had in response to the Morant bay rebellion.. if memory serves me it is one of the things that Eric Williams discussed the parrell development of both East and West Indies..

I did my secondary and most of my primary school education in the US, so am woefully ignorant of this topic. Maybe jamaicans.com should offer remedial courses for British-born, Yankee-bred dunces like myself.

One thing I liked about RPJ is that he recognized that had he been at Allahabad in 1857, he probably would have committed the same atrocities himself as he would have been a product of the time just as his great-great-great grandfather was.

Funny how he thought having an Indian ancestor from 8+ generations ago, made his background more interesting. What about us who have been mixed in every generation for the past three centuries? We should be the most fascinating people on the planet!

What did it mean that the assembly renounced its charter and Jamaica became a crown colony? Was the assembly really that autonomous? It could be that Parliament decided that since they had to &quot;defend&quot; the island they might as well rule it; the assemblymen probably did not pay for defense directly from their own pockets - a
twist on &quot;taxation w/o representation&quot;. One can't have &quot;independence&quot; and expect someone else to pay for it.

couldnt see the video either, so not sure about all this guy had to say. not surprised he would be taken with the idea of a brown ancestor and one who was historically a tyrant - in these days of information overload, something like that makes u stand out, and especially if your'e in the entertainment business. :shrug: it does mark a change from the past, though - look how long it took that old british actor, peter whathimname (it escape mi right now, it's a russian last name) to admit that he had black ancestry thru an ethiopian ancestor who married into russian aristocracy. also, that british actor who played gandhi grew up with a sense of shame at having indian ancestry.

as for the british policy of encouraging marriages with indian women as part of some colonial design, i don't know what to make of that as a comparison with policy in other colonies. certainly from the fiction about the Raj, e.g. The Jewel in the Crown, the indian culture i think possessed the british in a different way than other types of culture - even though indians were called the n-word by the british. it's perhaps something to do with the caste system - ruling brits were probably so offended at being considered outside the higher levels of the indian caste system they set about to create their own and attach it to their own colonial power to assert their transcendence.

- Peter Ustinov: Russian &amp; Ethiopian
- Ben Kingsley: Indian; he also played an Iranian immigrant in The House of Sand &amp; Fog, so it looks like he got over the spot of brown
