Glenn Beck has scheduled his “Restoring Honor” rally, which will include Sarah Palin among its featured speakers, on the steps of the Lincoln Memorial for August 28. Somehow the location and date ring a bell, don’t they? Ah yes! That’s where and when Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. delivered his “I Have a Dream” speech, 47 years ago (pictured at right). Now, The Washington Post reports, civil-rights activists including Al Sharpton are planning counter-marches and counter-rallies for the same date.

As the Post notes, Beck swore on his radio show that the timing was just a coincidence: “It was not my intention to select 8-28 because of the Martin Luther King tie. It is the day he made that speech. I had no idea until I announced it and I walked offstage and my researchers said, New York Times has already just published that this is [the same day as the King speech] -- and I said, ‘Oh, jeez.’” He went on to say that he “believes in divine providence,” and that “whites don’t own Abraham Lincoln” and “blacks don’t own Martin Luther King.”
Earlier this month, Glenn Beck “favorited” a Twitter post reading, “Embrace White Culture… WHITE-PRIDE,” from a white nationalist group called Malevolent Freedom. He also infamously suggested last summer that Barack Obama has a “deep-seated hatred for white people or the white culture.” Obama was born, and remains, half-white.
