That a majority of the population can be led to believe that a country where about 17% of the population has no health insurance and the same percentage of people suffer from what is called food insecurity ( not knowing where your next meal will come from), where a trillion dollars in wealth has been transferred in the last 25 years from the poor to the rich, that the United States is about doing good in the world and which spends more than all other nations combined to kill people is somehow a shining light on the hill, that the United States is generously helping the world speaks to the point that people can be led to believe just about anything.

That the internet with the truth of things is so readily available to most of the misled speaks either to the effectiveness of the right wing propaganda machine or the gullibility of most of the nation.

I suspect it is both effective cradle-to-grave propaganda and gullibility.



Does not working hard for 40 hours a week and often more than that, having no time for leisure or higher thought, always worrying about losing your job, your house, your family, working for abusive bosses because you cannot afford to quit from the time you get out of school to the time you either retire or die ... constitute a form of slavery?

It may be called wage slavery but it is a denigrating way to spend a life nonetheless.

But we've all come to accept it haven't we?

We CAN do better but we have to recognize that we are slaves in many senses of the word before we decide to make things better.

Those words were not original Churchill's - the great orator. Those were was from Jamaican Claude McKay's writing and of course McKay was not credited.

my point dear lady is that the opnion of the great and the good does not add validity to an opnion as they are equally as fallible as teh rest of us... And Betranmn Russels opnon has equal gravitas to my opnion or yours.. not more...

Mackay for insatance never agreed with Garvey though he never attacked Garvey he understood him.. He was a Kammunist then regained his sanity!

Actually it was not Churchill whos words you hear.. it was of a vaudville actor....who did alot of his radio speeches...

An Actor Norman Shelley made the claim he did it... And bear in mind the Commons was not wired for sound or broadcast at the time.. Most British people are aware fo the claim...but there is a contarty claim that Churchill re-did them at a later date.. however given the man was a micro manager with a war to fight. Also since the broadcast was made on the BBC and there is no contract between Churchill and the BBC then something aint quite right..

Let me just say that there was a record out there that churchill made after the speeches.. and there is reports in the newsppers that critsied the technical aspects of the speeches at the time.. He was hesitant, stumbled over the words in the commons.. basically insinuating what we now accept as fact that he was drunk most of the time!

Still they are great speeches!

But it demonstrates the supreiority of the confrontational manner of the British parliment to the paper towel wetness of the US houses.... Which was why Gorgeous George could rip apart a couple of force ripe senators who interogatted him though his facts were suspect !

Not entirely true, the opinion of Russel is validated by his credibility and respectability which neither you or I share, his words carry a lot more weight (gravitas) than both of ours combine in the marketplace of ideas. He also has the willing and accepting ears of the powerful and mighty in his forum. Hence if what he says is not already true it may very well soon be.

Mackay was an avowed socialist and black nationalist, his disagreement with Garvey was on the importance of Africa in the struggle for black liberation a question most (black) socialist at the time found perplexing.
