John became the second elderly man to drown at the beach within two days.
A police source told the Observer that about 11:30 am Sunday John and his wife were at the beach when he complained of not feeling well. He then told her he was going for a swim and dived headway in the water. When his wife did not see him resurface she notified the lifeguard on duty.
The lifeguard reportedly rescued him from the water in an unconscious state and he was rushed to hospital where medical personnel attempted to resuscitate him. John was pronounced dead about 12:25 pm. The body was removed to the morgue for a post-mortem examination.
