THE Ministry of Justice has called in the police to investigate the circumstances surrounding the disappearance of $797,000 from the Drug Court Rehabilitation Programme.
The Drug Court Rehabilitation Programme is a joint initiative between the Ministries of Justice and Health. The programme operates within the legal framework of the Drug Court (Treatment and Rehabilitation of Offenders) Act of 2001.
According to Permanent Secretary Robert Rainford, the ministry's internal auditors discovered that the money was missing.
“We have to send a strong message that behaviours like these will not be tolerated and no one is exempt as we strive to stem the misappropriation or theft of government resources, whether financial or otherwise,” Rainford said in a release.
