Re: Jamaica best place to live in caribbean
it IS the best place to live-- if you are 'white' that is...
then your rights will be respected by government & resident alike...
if you are 'black'-- not so much;
maybe it's a subliminal residual effect from all the white-jesus paintings hanging in the numerous churches

Natral, it's not difficult to accept that position for Jamaica. The result of the poll puts us ahead only in the Caribbean and that pleases me because I thought one or two others in this group would have eclipsed us... Wonder who are the top ten?

Re: Jamaica best place to live in caribbean
I wonder what country Newsweek is located in and whether the results of that poll reflect in any way the foreign policies of that country.
I'll go check out their methodology as to who said Jamaica is the best place in the Caribbean to live and to see how the questions were asked.
I'll be back.

Re: Jamaica best place to live in caribbean
I'm back..
Here's the first inkling that the poll might not be all it seems to be at first glance:
"Most Caribbean states were left out, leaving only Jamaica , Cuba and the Dominican Republic that were evaluated. “Our list represents a snapshot of how countries looked in 2008 and 2009 (we always used the most recent data available for each metric) rather than a historic or predictive view --,” stated Newsweek.

Re: Jamaica best place to live in caribbean
Franksterr,
The list I quote from is the Human Development Index which is put out by the United Nations.
The Newsweek poll used the following to get results in its poll:
"They assessed countries for their national well-being – education, health, quality of life, economic competitiveness and political environment."
Now if you or anyone else think for one minute that the Newsweek poll was either honest or thorough you have to consider that Cuba would not finish high in any poll that asked about "economic competitiveness" or "political environment".
They are way ahead of everyone else in health, education and quality of life/human development.
Cuba cannot possibly be considered tops in economic competitiveness since it has a socialist economy not based on profits and most people do not have a clue how that works. Cuba's GDP in the past ten years or so is usually growing at twice the rate as that in Jamaica
My guess is that no Cubans were polled unless they lived in Florida.
Polling people outside Cuba about what goes on inside Cuba cannot get accurate answers or honest answers given that the United States has been at war with Cuba for fifty years and the U.S. controlled corporate media has poisoned most minds against Cuba, Fidel, Raul, socialism all things Cuban.
You cannot have grown up getting your news and information mainly from the corporate media and then think Cuba is anything but a totalitarian prison.
On the face of it, given the information we have available on the polling methods, you cannot take the Newsweek poll seriously.
Imagine what would happen to Newsweek's paid advertising revenues; it's lifeblood were it to come out with a poll that said anything good about Cuba.
That sort of information is always censored - not by the government -that sort of thing is not necessary since both the government and the compliant, complicit media have set up the environment in which the media operate. The government tells the country that Cuba is bad. The media prints that message verbatim with no looking into the often false claims. The people believe it not having any alternative source for their information . The people then do not want to read in a magazine that Cuba is good.
Any magazine or paper or TV program depends on sponsors and any single media outlet going against the PERCEIVED truths is boycotted, not read and soon out of business. It's censorship under our so-called freedom of the press.
And I'll bet most people do not believe what I am saying because it wasn't on the networks.

I wouldn't say if you're white, I'd say if you have money.
Even Afghanistan and Iraq are nice places to live, if you have money.
