Black children are now living in poverty at higher rates despite having a black president in the White House.

While poverty numbers are high overall, surging from nearly 40 million in 2008 to almost 44 million in 2009, black poverty numbers are far worse than whites, according to the U.S. Census Bureau.

An estimated 41.9 percent of young blacks are living in poverty, according to the Census.

“Simply stated, while nearly 1 in 10 white Americans are in poverty, one in four African Americans and Latinos are trapped by poverty,&quot; said Out of Poverty Caucus Co-Chair Rep. Barbara Lee. &quot;This disparity is a national disgrace, and it is my hope that all Americans will work together to ensure that America is a land of prosperity and opportunity for all.&quot;

Those statistics were just released today and you could not ask for a better indication of extensive and institutional racism in the United States.

You also could not ask for better proof that restitution is due to the descendants of slaves. They cannot catch up on their own and that should be as obvious as the fact that they did not get into the poor condition they did on their own either.

Of course the racists will be out there saying that blacks and Hispanics are lazy and/or stupid and that it is their own fault they haven't achieved what the whites have.

Then there is the group that says&quot; Hey, I never owned slaves, why should my tax money go to help THOSE PEOPLE? &quot;

The thing on restitution can be likened to a card game.
There are two players and one is raking in the money while the other steadily loses.
Then they find out that the winning player was cheating.
So the cheating player says &quot;Okay, from now on, NO cheating, we start fresh.
To which the losing player says &quot; Hey... what about all my money you now have that you cheated to get ?&quot;

Not much different is it ? except the slaves and their descendants were/are more than just cheated in a card game.


This is the richest capitalist country in the world. At the peak of the economy back in the Clinton presidencies they failed to cut poverty by much. The best they can do is a 25% poverty rate not the figure they give you.
The official poverty rate given out by the government is a LIE.
A BIG LIE.
Why??
Because the OFFICIAL poverty rate is something like $21,000.00 per year for a family of four. That's about $400.00 a week. Rent in the Boston area (no heat) is about 1300.00 per month for a two-bedroom apartment. That leaves about $350.00 for the month for everything else. Not very realistic is it ?. It's a big lie to make things look better than they are, isn't it?

No a family of four needs $40,000.00. per year, DOUBLE the official poverty rate level to support them in still a poor fashion. So just how many more people should be included in that poverty statistic ? It's going to be at least double the OFFICIAL rate

The reality is that it does not matter how the economy grows if the distribution of wealth stays as it has .
Under capitalism, free market, oligarchy or whatever you choose to call it we will have somewhere around a 25% poverty rate which, due to the racism inherent in the United States will mean proportionately more black and Hispanics in poverty in absolute numbers.

The twin evils of capitalism and racism doom blacks and Hispanics to poverty at rates higher than the whites for the foreseeable future .

but needs to be re-visited...

Total rubbish BG,
Under capitalism there is always at least 25% poverty. While black people are proportionately poorer than whites, the people in poverty are from all races.
Racism makes it worse for blacks but the main reason for poverty and the resulting effects, crime, drugs, violence is capitalism.
You have it backwards.
