I used to work as a stock boy in electronics at Macy's in the late 80's. When I a nice car (Mercedes or BMW & Bentley) pulled up none of us wanted to take the TV out to that car. We knew there would be no tip. When a old "bruk" or "cab" pull up we would fight to help that customer.

The biggest tips come from people who cannot afford it...DWL

Jazzie that's why I love your board persona so much, people do what works for them. Now if you as an individual would not do/say what others do it should not bother you what someone else does. Do your thang!! I see so many peeps on here that trying to live other people life for them.....an me nevva call na name so doan badda wid the rotten mango flinging cause it slide affa mi.

Xavier I think that's a big assumption though - and you sorta judging them - just because they drive an ole bruk nuh mean they can;t afford a good tip... How do you know that they don;t use their money to do something else that makes them happy... maybe travel for instance? or live in a nice comfortable house?

I think it says a lot about that person if they really are not wealthy that they choose to be generous to someone else... maybe they know what it is like to be a working stiff and can sympathize....

I guess we are all guilty of making assumptions about other people.

You are right. We cannot judge by the car they drive. In fact I know people who drive an old bruk that is rich. Back then it seems to me that only the people who did not &quot;seem rich&quot; tipped.

Jazz- I totally get where you're coming from.

Question though - do you think this would apply across the board tho - the idea that everybody has to do what works for them ...

Here's what I mean - my mom lives over by Tower Isle.

A few houses from her, a guy has a big hulking old truck on his front yard - so old it's sinking down into the ground - it's there just rotting down - it's been about 7 years it's there now. Quite the eyesore. But it works for him.

What about gay marriage? I know a couple in NJ here that's been fighting for years and trying to champion legislation for the cause. That's their lifestyle. It works for them.

I wouldn't dream of trying to live the lives of these people or try &amp; live their life for them, but yet I can't see the logic/reasoning in their choices.

Stormmey - you see what I'm saying ...

But yes Jazz, I hear you on the example Xavier gave - you can't know what's what with a person by what they drive, where they live ...

I was a waiter for a couple of years in a restaurant nightclub that was a few blocks from the White House. The tabs were high. On weekends there was a cue out to the street of people dressed to the nines waiting for a table. It was interesting who tipped well, and who didn't. It was a great job, an eye-opening job.

Maybe Forty can attest to this...I've seen rich folks wrap up the rolls at their tables at the restaurant and leave with them..

...or maybe they think they must get their money's worth, every last dime worth of it...even hiff it involves carrying the rolls out the restaurant.

Most everyone tipped generously. Regulars always tipped 20% or more. Servers from many downtown restaurants would often hang out after work at Au Pied de Cochon, and when these waiter friends came in, they would tip crazy good like 30-50%. (If you know any servers or exservers, then you may have noticed that they ALWAYS tip generously) Iranians were huge spenders and would sometimes have a couple bottles of dom Perignon. Sometimes their tab could inch near $1000. Secretaries would sometimes come for early dinner... they were terrible tippers... but then they didn't have much money. Charlie Wilson came in often. He tipped great... and he stayed late. There were twenty backgammon tables, and high-rolling Iranians and middle easterners would come in a usually crush their challengers. We got to know these guys (those games were their work), and they tipped great. There were a couple of high paid sports stars that tried to own the place, and they were generous with the wait staff. But, their entourages were annoying and demanding, and they didn't become regulars.
