Amid a flurry of rumours that Buju Banton has been freed, the Jamaican community here has one piece of advice: follow the Jamaica Observer.

The Observer is the only Jamaican newspaper with a reporter covering the trial here at the Gibbons US Court where Banton, real name Mark Myrie, is nervously awaiting a verdict on charges of conspiracy to possess with intent to distribute five kilograms or more of cocaine.

The jury is continuing its deliberations ahead of a verdict expected later today.

Jamaican Reggae singer Buju Banton will have to wait until Monday to know his fate as the 13 member panel of jurors have yet to come to a decision.

The jurors are expected to resume their deliberations at 8:45 Monday morning.

Banton, whose real name is Mark Myrie, has been in jail for nine months and 14 days after being hauled out of his Tamarac home in South Florida on December 10 last year, two days after his co-defendants Ian Thomas and James Mack were held during a drug bust at a police controlled warehouse in Saratoga, Tampa.

Both signed plea deals and agreed to testify against Myrie in exchange for lesser sentences. However, none of the two took the stand as Mack pleaded the fifth amendment and neither the prosecution or the defence found Thomas' testimony to be of any assistance to their case.

Two weeks ago Mack signed an affidavit saying he never knew Myrie until after his arrest and that the artiste had no knowledge of a firearm and US$130,000 that was found in a Honda motorcar he was driving.

Myrie was reportedly offered a two-year prison term but refused. He has consistently maintained his innocence and claimed that he was entrapped by Government informant, Alexander Johnson.

It is not a good signal that the jury has spent a day and half deliberating and is yet to reach a verdict. The trial was very short, it was about 3 days...and no verdict. It means that they are people on the jury who want to convict his asss and a few maybe even just one(the black juror ) fighting for him. It is not in Buju's favor that the whole Dudus matter was plastered on the front page of major newspapers for weeks on end just a few months ago((#justblamebruce). The jury is looking at this dread locked black dude and thinking don't all Jamaicans smoke weed and deal drugs anyway...and who is he kidding when he testified that he believed that the potbellied informant was an important music industry exec who could provide him with some connections in the biz? Buju has got to be excreting bricks this weekend and singing if I could turn back time.
