The noisy soup/tea /whatever liquid drinkers have it right.

As with good wine when you take a lot of air in with the sip it magnifies the reception in your olfactory centers (nose) which distinguish good tasting things from bad.

It is the smell of things that determine good or bad and if it's good you want to smell more of it and if it's bad you want a bad head cold so your nose can't tell you anything.

Your mouth can only taste sweet, sour, and two other things I can't remember at the moment and your nose does all the other work that we call tasting and usually associate with the mouth.

Has anyone seen the movie &quot;Tampopo&quot; ? (Japanese comedy? w/subtitles about the making of great soup). There is a scene in it in which a class of Japanese girls in a restaurant is being taught how to eat spaghetti in the Western fashion without slurping.

They are all doing pretty well winding the spaghetti on the fork and eating in a demure way and then a rather portly European man at the next table starts eating his spaghetti and is making noises like a rooting pig as he does so.
