Zinc. For a few persons it is something on a vitamin bottle (you know, "contains from A to Zinc"
, for most of us it is something that is over our heads. Literally, as in a zinc roof. Now, in recent times zinc sheeting has got a really bad rap, what with all of those fancy options for keeping the sun and rain off the ceiling and the persons and house stuff below at bay expanding dramatically. Yeah man. There was a time when it was zinc for almost everybody and wooden shingles for the wealthy few. Then came plastic shingles and one whole heap of things that were supposed to look better then zinc and perform better too. It became a status symbol to not use zinc. Heck, Buju Banton even said it in 'Driver A': "Mi waan change mi zinc and put up decromastic."
But Jackass has a zinc roof over his stable and he can report to all and sundry that that thing is tough! OK, it is not pretty at all. In fact, one part has a totally different colour from the other and there are some suspiciously pitchy-patchy parts on a few sheets, but it came through Nicole without a single leak. Not even a drop. And where Jackass lives it was raining long before it started in other places and continued after he heard about flash flood warnings being lifted.
It was the second time that zinc roof had been really put to the test while Jackass has been domiciled there, the previous occasion being in Gustav. Again, it came through with flying colours, with just one very minor leak (and Gustav poured out more rain than Nicole in Jackass' part of Jamaica land we love). Apparently it had also done very well in Ivan too.
Still, there are those who would give zinc a bad rap and associate it with 'ol house', just as they dismiss good good terrazzo tiles and swear by ceramic that breaks at the drop of anything relatively hard on a tile. But Jackass has heard so many people with slab roofing, notably townhouses, complaining about leaks after Nicole and he can't help but smile.
Yeah man, the zinc that so many people building new houses would not be caught dead with over their heads has stood up and stood up well, while the fancy dancy stuff has failed in so many cases.
But no so we stay as a people, dealing in what looks good much more than what actually works? Heck, we even deal a lot better with people who look good rather than people who actually work. Why do you think preachers and politicians dress up so and con people over and over and over again?
