Manchester couple cleaned toilets to make ends meet

CLEANING toilets for a living was not a part of their dream. But that's exactly what Dawnette Baldeo and her husband Greg had to do while living overseas pursuing their dreams for higher education.
There weren't many options and since the Seventh-day Adventist couple had two young sons, they did what they had to do to make ends meet.
<span style="font-weight: bold">"It wasn't my dream to be doing this - cleaning toilets that is — but it went a long way to helping me achieve my dreams</span>," Dawnette said in her usual upbeat and cheerful tone.
At the base of those personal dreams, she said, were to find the right marriage partner, be an entrepreneur and to be financially secure.
"I learnt that there is nothing too menial for me to do if it is legal and morally right in reaching the desired result. It taught me to persevere... to keep my eye on my dream. It taught me that giving up was not an option when you have a dream to pursue," she said.
Her husband cleaned toilets right beside her, while finishing a four-year degree, which he did in only three years. Greg is currently working on his Masters — a dream achieved by one who didn't even finish high school.
As if cleaning toilets were not humbling enough, his wife has also been pelted with body fluid and spat on by an old couple while she worked as a nurse's aid in Florida.
Today, Dawnette is a consultant specialising in customer experience and is the founder and CEO of Faith Management Company, a human resource training consultancy started in 2008, while Greg is an ordained pastor in Manchester.
The Baldeos, who married on March 25, 2000, have also authored a book titled I Believe in My Dream, which was launched in April of this year.
In spite of their relative succcess, however, the couple said it was the challenges of their past that have helped shape their future and for this reason, the book aims to motivate young people to focus on and achieve their dreams.
<span style="font-weight: bold">"The negative situations and circumstances didn't shape me. Instead, I shaped them to suit my purpose.</span> I learnt some hard life lessons, but from them I gleaned the principles and guidelines that we have placed in the book so that others, especially our youth, will be able to learn from us," said Dawnette.
"Having travelled to several countries, I found that there were a lot of young people who had dreams (but) had no idea how to accomplish them. We decided that with our experiences, we would give (them) tools to assist them on the pathway of achieving their dreams," she said, adding: "My challenge to young people is go for your dreams. Stop at nothing that is morally right. If the door is closed, go through the window and if that closes, go to the roof, but never give up on your dreams."
Born Dawnette Lee Usherwood in Lucea, Hanover, she is the only biological child of Leroy and Mearlina Usherwood. Though her parents did not make it beyond All-Age school, she was told at an early age that going to college was a must. Her father, an auto mechanic, worked literally night and day to help her acquire tertiary education.
She attended Rusea's High School up to sixth form, taught English for one year at Green Island Comprehensive High, then went overseas for another year. Upon returning home, she enrolled at CAST (now the University of Technology) and after three years she achieved a Diploma in Business Administration.
In 1994, at age 23, she worked as a junior accountant at KPMG Peat Marwick. In that same year, her father, who had started building the family home got a major stroke and the family was told he would not live.
"He could barely speak, but the words he managed to choke out were, "I won't be able to finish my house," Dawnette recalled. "The house was only half finished, but since completing it seemed to be weighing heavily on him, I promised him that I would see it done. How was I going to do this? I had no idea."
Two years later, through strong-will, determination, much prayer, and what she desbribes as a "miracle loan" from the National Housing Trust, she made good on her promise to her dad. He has since recovered and is giving support to his wife who is terminally ill.
But the struggles weren't over for the Baldeos. In fact, it seemed they had just begun. In 1997, while a student at Florida Atlantic University (FAU), she was struck by a debilitating illness that is, up to today, undiagnosed.
"When my ongoing illness started I was very depressed and didn't want to pursue my dreams, but I realised that I needed to get back on track because the doctors could not say what was wrong with me. I decided to focus on my dreams instead of my illness," she said.
The illness caused her right side to go numb and is very painful depending on the severity of the particular attack. This occurs on average once per week and lasts for two to three days. This goes on for about three months and then breaks for about two months.
To make matters worse, in her final semester of FAU, she had a major car accident in West Palm Beach, Florida, where the car crossed over five busy lanes on Highway 95 before flipping to land on its side. She suffered neck and back injuries, but recovered to graduate with a degree in International Business.
But even with a life fraught with challenges, Dawnette did not allow her dreams to die. Since August 5, she has been in Alberta, Canada, seeking a diagnosis for her illness and recovering from a hysterectomy.Comment

Contrary to what you assumed, I have never advocated for all blacks in Jamaica or any where else in the Diaspora to return to Africa. Such a position would not be beneficial to black people, in fact it would play right in to hands of the former colonizers/slave masters. Can you imagine the elation if the Brits and their surrogates should wake up tomorrow and some how the majority of blacks were to voluntarily leave Britain and other countries ,where blacks are considered as undesirables?
In my ideal world, it would be poetic justice , if the people who were once colonized could immigrate to the homeland of their former colonizers , in sufficient numbers to affect the balance of power. This is what the Brits are terrified of ,and it is the primary motivation behind the systematic incarceration of
blacks and other minorities. This is the Very reason why I disagree with the suggestion by some posters that maybe blacks should have less kids. Fact is there are several articles written in prominent European newspapers expressing concern about the low birth rate among their citizens(CITIZENS IN THIS CASE IS A CODE WORD FOR CAUCASIANS). A wonda why dem concerned so much?
A past famous general once said, “power grows out of the barrel of a gun". Since blacks worldwide have little or no economic, military or political power, one of the few avenues we can resort to address our grievances is media ,be it electronic or print. We can use this medium to let our voices be heard, (what you would derogatorily refer to as "HOT AIR"
If there is one thing that hypocritical countries like Britain abhor it any attempt to expose their hypocrisy. .Brits love to portray a air of fairness to the world and even go as far as to criticize countries like China, North Korea, Zimbabwe etc concerning the treatment of their citizens .Yet they engaged in some of the very despicable practices they accused these countries of . Fortunately the Guardian publishing "hot air"was able to removed the covers and exposed the soiled undergarments of your beloved Britain.

I have never given britain a free pass,where they err I am big enough to say so,no one is saying that they are free from racism I said in my initial post that the criminal justice system is institutionally racist,I have railed against the injustices in britain numerous times,admittedly I may give them the benefit of the doubt sometimes because it is after all my adopted country,...but I am not going to be one-sided and say it is all the fault of the UK racists,...black people need to step up to the plate too,some of us are not guilty of racism but we are guilty of apathy,we need to start being self reliant and stop blaming the white man for everything that ails us.
Edited to add,...... some issues take on a different hue when travelled across the atlantic,and you may see things entirely different than I,I live in it and experience it,....and not everything that is written should be taken as gospel,even when written by so-called experts,...some people have their own agendas to follow.Comment

Through out human history only infants are not held responsible for their station in life. Since I could never regard the entire black race (which I am a part of) as infants then I can only conclude that yes blacks bear some responsibility for the dire circumstances we find our selves in worldwide .
That been said, the Brits would never ascribe blame to themselves concerning Hitler’s the v2 rockets attacks on London ,during world war two. The USA will never blame themselves for the pearl harbor attacks. Last but not least, the Jewish people will never blame themselves for the holocaust .
Some how whenever there is a discussion concerning the injustices meted out to blacks ,the conversation invariably get steered to, blame the people who are at the receiving end of such injustices. We are the most passive ,forgiving and self blaming people on the planet. IMO ,instead of blaming our selves we should combine our collective mental powers to formulate effective ideas to combat injustices like these .
Since the Brits hate to be exposed as hypocrites, we could take advantage of this knowledge, and make this article from the guardian go viral on the internet. IT SHOULD BE POSTED ON EVERY FORUM WE VISIT. I guarantee that if this article gather sufficient momentum worldwide, the Brits will have no choice but to implement measures, post-haste to correct this horrible situation.Comment

now this is a complete distortion of the life and work of the rt. hon. marcus mosiah garvey...national hero of jamaica...

in any case that perception of 'back to africa' as a mass physical repatriation is ludicrous and a media distortion of the true message of garvey;
love for britain need not equal hate for africa or everything african (including yourself)...
but that is a sidetrack to the real point...
there are deep societal roots of so-called black people being incarcerated at 7 times the rate of others in britain..roots i suspect are similar to the criminal justice shytstem in amerikkka;
it's not a puzzle...blacks must improve themselves by their own power at every turn...

Plea: The Archbishop of York Dr John Sentamu has urged young black men to avoid the trappings of crime
The Archbishop of York has urged young black people to stop blaming racism for their problems.
Dr John Sentamu warned that prisons, mental health units and young offender institutions held too many black people.
He told a new generation: ‘Your future success does not lie in guns, gangs and knives or in the worship of celebrities.’
Instead, they should ‘work hard’ and ‘stay focused’, he said.
The Ugandan-born Archbishop, second in the hierarchy of the Church of England, also criticised African nations for too readily trying to blame their former ‘colonial masters’ for their difficulties.
He pointed to African corruption and lack of democracy and warned that nations were squandering their opportunities.
Dr Sentamu has become a major figure in race relations in Britain over the past decade.
He was a highly influential member of Sir William Macpherson’s tribunal that reported into the murder of black teenager Stephen Lawrence in 1998 and condemned police for ‘institutional racism’. He also headed the inquiry into the killing of Damilola Taylor on a South London estate.
And he has regularly reminded police forces about the number of times that officers have stopped him and searched him.
Dr Sentamu, who marked Black History Month with his interview, added: ‘Today our prisons and mental health units are disproportionately full of men and women from minority ethnic background
But he told young people that they should fight prejudice and bias by challenging injustice.
‘Work hard at your education, stay focused and don’t sit around waiting for success to be delivered to you on a plate, because it won’t be. Don’t blame someone else, for you have the energy, potential and creativity so use it for the good of humankind. Don’t waste it.
‘Your future success does not lie in guns, gangs and knives or in the worship of celebrities but in the pursuit of study and hard work and in valuing who you are under God.’
The Archbishop said African nations had to cope with trade tariffs loaded in favour of Western countries and multinational companies that plundered resources from failed states.
But he added: ‘We cannot lay all the blame of Africa’s ills at the feet of Europe and the colonial masters.’
‘The high number of African nations that have rewritten their constitutions in order to stay in power indefinitely is staggering.
‘This cannot be healthy for democracy nor for the nation’s poor.
‘Europe may have underdeveloped Africa but I believe we’ve had the opportunity since to shape our future and destiny and are in danger of squandering these opportunities

Some comments to the archbishop's suggestion.....
The problem is that far too many people of African descent blame history for their woes, especially in the USA where it is big business for some such as Al Sharpton etc. As someone who lived in Africa for 23 years, the truth is that they have to work hard and earn the respect of those around them and not continually make false
excuses supported by silly white liberals with guilt complexes to make their way in the modern World. The fact is in my experience the descendants of the salves sent to the USA are far better off potentially now than their descendants that the African chiefs did not sell to the slavers. Just eliminate the Roberrt Mugabes.

What? Praise from Daily Mail readers? Then I realised - they haven't read the article, they've only read the headline. As well as encouraging young black men to work hard, he quite rightly castigates powerful multinationals that plunder failing countries and states, again quite rightly, that European nations have under resourced Africa. We are living high on the profits gained when we stole the resources from Africa a couple of hundred or so years ago. These young black men are in this country because we invited their ancestors to come here to do the jobs we didn't want to do ourselves - then we treated them badly, and we've been doing so ever since. This is not just a problem for the black community, it's a problem for the whole community - we should be working together to sort it out, not blaming it all on young black men.

This great Man truly knows and speaks the truth, a very loyal servant of GOD, for all to know and see, he should be number one in the Church.
Also it is true a great pity ALL the mp's do not follow his example in speaking the TRUTH may be a better NATION for that to happen.
