Father of dead 13-year-old to stay in jail pending autopsy

, October 12, 2010. Moussa Sidime, a 71-year-old Montreal-area man, appeared in court in connection with the death of his 13-year-old daughter.


LONGUEUIL, QUE.—The father of a teenage girl who died under mysterious circumstances will remain behind bars for now as authorities attempt to confirm just how she died.

The Crown said Tuesday that no new charges would be brought against the Montreal-area man, Moussa Sidime, until an autopsy is completed on his daughter.

The 71-year-old man, already accused of aggravated assault, had a scheduled bail hearing put off until Friday.

The man has been jailed since his daughter Noutene Sidime, 13, was hospitalized last week.

Police accused the man of striking the girl last Wednesday. On Saturday, three days after the alleged assault, the teenager died.

“Police are still working on the case and we don’t have everything yet so we’re waiting for an autopsy report to reveal whether or not there will be other accusations,” said prosecutor Julie Laborde.

“Right now, we only know for sure that a death occurred, but we have to know what was the cause of death. As of right now, there’s nothing more that we can do other than wait for the medical evidence.”

Police said the man called 911 last Wednesday to say the girl was unconscious and bleeding from the nose. She was taken to the Montreal Children’s Hospital.

Family, friends and relatives of both the victim and the suspect crowded into a courtroom in Longueuil, south of Montreal.

None wanted to speak to journalists there, imploring them to respect the family’s wish for privacy.

“We’re in mourning. That’s enough,” one man said.

Defence lawyer Marie-Josée Duhaime, new to the case, said Tuesday that she knew few details.

She said she hoped to meet with members of the family, including two adult children who arrived in Quebec from the United States.

The lawyer said she met with her client once and said he was devastated by the death.

“He’s overwhelmed with the situation. He doesn’t grasp what’s going on. He’s very sad of course,” said Duhaime.

There was more sadness at Jacques Rousseau High School, where about 700 of Noutene’s classmates took the football field and unleashed balloons into the air in her honour.

A student organized the event after word of the young girl’s death spread on social networking sight Facebook.

Principal Fabienne Longtin called the event particularly touching.

The artistically gifted Grade 8 student was in a special arts-heavy program at the school. It’s an especially tight-knit group — with about 60 students in Grades 8 and 9 — and the students were especially affected by the death.

“It was an atmosphere that was like a funeral home, an atmosphere of mourning,” Longtin said. “We put large boards on the wall to let the students write messages and express themselves.”

Psychologists are also being provided to students and staff. Many first heard the news when they returned to school after the long weekend and found media camped out front.

The dead girl’s mother was present in court Tuesday. Duhaime, lawyer for the accused, said she briefly held her hand and offered her condolences.

The Crown described the accused as a “person like you and me,” with no previous criminal record.

The case was put off until Friday, but Duhaime said she was skeptical that a scheduled bail hearing would be held.

“At the moment, I’d say no. There are too many things we need to know. We want to do this properly.”
