This is an odd survey. How does Mississippi rank and a state like Massachu...(sp) not rank? Especially when the index is based on EDUCATION, life expectancy and GDP
7/5th of all people do not understand fractions.

odd survey as to how they meshed US states with countries in the same graph to give an illusion. e.g. that Mississippi outranks Italy
and then list the United States as a country.

I read something a while back that the Hartford area is a great place to live in terms of income to cost of living. Last week Hartford and New Haven made the list of the US 25 most dangerous cities.
I did not know that CT was rated low for job growth. Sounds like time hard every where and every where has pro's and cons.

Connecticut is among the healthiest states in the nation, ranking fourth behind New England neighbors Vermont, Massachusetts and New Hampshire, according a report by America's Health Rankings, an annual study that examines national health on a state-by-state basis.
The state has improved its standing since last year, when it came in seventh. Connecticut's low prevalence of smoking and children in poverty, as well as a lower prevalence of obesity than most other states and high immunization coverage, contributed to the jump, according to the report.
In the past five to 10 years, the proportion of smokers in the state and the percentage of residents dying from cardiovascular disease and cancer both decreased.
However, the study cautioned that Connecticut is challenged by a high prevalence of binge drinking and infectious diseases. Additionally, uninsured residents increased in the past year from 9.7 percent to 11 percent of the population, according to the study.

Factors considered in the rankings included access to health care, obesity, diabetes, smoking, drinking, health disparities and deaths from cardiovascular disease and cancer. Data was obtained from sources including the Centers for Disease Prevention, the American Medical Association and the Census Bureau.
Overall, the study found that the nation's health improved 1 percent since 2009. Tobacco use decreased to a 21-year-low, but obesity and diabetes rates continued to rise. Children living in poverty and lack of health insurance also presented formidable challenges, the report states.
Vermont topped the 2010 list, as it has for the previous three years. At the bottom of this year's list is Mississippi, ranked 50th. Louisiana, Arkansas, Nevada and Oklahoma were also ranked low. Georgia, which was ranked 43rd in 2009, had the highest level of improvement, jumping to 36th.
The report noted that while the United States spends more than any other country on health care, it falls behind other countries on a number of measures, including having the highest mortality rate from treatable conditions of 19 other industrialized nations.

Maybe this list is weighing heavily on the fact that those northwestern burbs of CT are extremely wealthly, and that overshadows places like Bridgeport and Hartford.7/5th of all people do not understand fractions.
