Baca takes the heat in forum on Mitrice Richardson case</span></span>



Los Angeles County Sheriff Lee Baca listened Monday as several people in an auditorium of concerned residents in Compton peppered him and his department with allegations of a cover-up in the death of Mitrice Richardson.

Richardson, 24, drew national attention when she disappeared in September 2009 after being released from the sheriff's Lost Hills/Malibu station. The department was criticized for allowing her to leave about midnight without her car, purse or cellphone.

As the accusations flew, and dozens of people applauded and cheered, Baca chose to listen rather than engage the speakers. He said he was there to understand the community's concerns.

&quot;We believe that it's one of the most incredible tragedies that could happen to an individual young woman&quot; Baca said of Richardson's death.

Many in the audience thanked Baca for his appearance, but warned him that not all of his department's deputies show the same concern. Others called for the FBI to look into the Richardson case.

&quot;We don't have money, so sweep it under the rug&quot; said Avery Cody Sr., 40, of Compton. &quot;Lee Baca don't know what his people are doing in these streets. He's at his house.&quot;

Steve Whitmore, spokesman for the sheriff's Department, said Baca's appearance was an indication that he wants his department to investigate every detail of Richardson's disappearance and death.

&quot;It's important to the community so its important for us,&quot; he said. &quot;And as long as Sheriff Baca is sheriff of L.A. County, that will be the case&quot;

Nearly 11 months after her disappearance, Richardson's remains were found in a remote Malibu Canyon ravine.

Most recently, the department's handling of Richardson's remains was questioned when a coroner's official said they were removed from a ravine without his department's permission.

Assistant Chief Coroner Ed Winter said in an interview that he was &quot;very clear&quot; in telling sheriff's officials that they should not move Richardson's remains until coroner's investigators had arrived or until clearance had been granted.

A sheriff's spokesman acknowledged that deputies removed Richardson's body without the coroner's permission, but said they did so because detectives were concerned that it was getting dark and that animals might destroy the remains.

Initially, sheriff's officials believed that only a skull and possibly a couple of other bones were there, and say they were granted permission to remove partial remains, a fact Winter disputed. But when the rest of her skeleton was found, sheriff's officials proceeded without clearance to move the entire body. Winter said he clearly told sheriff's officials not to do so, a message a sheriff's captain said never reached his deputies.

Officials from both agencies agreed last month to begin an inquiry into the handling of the body. The inquiry is being overseen by the Office of Independent Review, the sheriff's watchdog agency.

Michael Richardson, who has filed a wrongful-death lawsuit against the county, also spoke, hinting that deputies had a responsibility for his daughter's death.

Baca watched Monday with his chin resting on his hand as one woman said her faith in the police was gone.

&quot;None, zero,&quot; the crowd echoed.
