NEW YORK (Dow Jones)--A Norwegian newspaper in possession of WikiLeaks' entire trove of 250,000 diplomatic cables is scouring the documents for new revelations, one of the reporters assigned to the story said Thursday.
Newspapers in other countries are asking Aftenposten to share its information, said Mr. Rønneberg, adding that "for the time being, we have not shared it with colleagues in other countries. This is a decision for our editors to contemplate until after the holidays."
The paper is finding information in the cables that can immediately be published as breaking news, but it's also going through enormous amounts of background information on major news events that Mr. Rønneberg said will provide fodder for reporters to use in interviews with government officials and other powerful figures.
"All this background is fantastic material to use when you go into an interview--it enables us to ask better questions of our sources," said Mr. Rønneberg. <span style="font-weight: bold">"That's of immense value and it's something that's going to last for years."</span>
Asked about the controversy generated by Wikileaks and the criticism of the organization's actions coming from the highest levels of the U.S. government, Mr. Rønneberg said, "<span style="font-weight: bold">Any problem the U.S. government might have with Wikileaks or the original source of these documents is not really our concern."</span>
Mr. Rønneberg estimated that material from Wikileaks has already generated 50 news stories, including four or five front-page stories, and he expects the cables to keep him and his colleagues busy for a long time to come.
<span style="font-weight: bold">"Although other newspapers have covered a lot of ground already, there are literally thousands of stories to tell," said Rønneberg. "You can type in almost any key phrase related to politics in the past 20 years, and you're going to find a story there." </span>
