i wouldn't say canadians as a whole, but i think most people other than black people who have felt the sting would believe it. canadian doesn't necessarily denote white people, which is how i see it used often.

I think everyone including black canadians,and canadian jamaicans especially would have believed it,there is no reason not to believe such news until if and when they are proven otherwise.

A honeymooner's death near Cape Town involved a taxi driver, hit men and her husband, Shrien Dewani, prosecutors say.

It was a murder that seemed to confirm every South African horror story. Newlywed Anni Dewani, a Swedish-born engineering graduate, was taken away in a hijacked taxi last month near Cape Town and found dead the next day.

But on Tuesday, Cape Town prosecutors turned the story on its head. Prosecutor Rodney De Kock alleged that her husband, who maintains that he was thrown from the cab, paid two hit men about $2,200 to kill her, plotting with taxi driver Zola Tongo.

&quot;The alleged hijacking was in fact not a hijacking, but part of a plan of subterfuge which Shrien Dewani, the husband of the deceased, and the accused had designed to conceal the true facts, to wit: that the deceased was murdered at the instance of her husband,&quot; De Kock told the Cape Town Supreme Court as it accepted Tongo's guilty plea.

Prosecutors did not comment on whether they planned to seek the extradition from Britain of Dewani, who denied the accusation through a spokesman.

The case has fascinated British tabloids, which dubbed it the &quot;Honeymoon Horror.&quot; A Facebook page memorial to Anni Dewani drew more than 21,000 followers. Many of them were South Africans shocked not only by the killing but by the shadow it cast over the country's reputation so soon after it successfully hosted the soccer World Cup in June and July.

Shrien Dewani, 31, of Bristol, who owns a chain of nursing homes, outlined his version of events in an interview last month with Britain's Daily Mail. He described being thrown out of the rear passenger seat by the hijackers, who drove off with his 28-year-old wife. He said the taxi driver had been released minutes earlier.

But Tongo's testimony — which was part of a deal he struck with prosecutors for a reduced sentence of 18 years — portrayed a coldblooded murder plot.

In the Daily Mail interview, Dewani said he and his wife were on their way to their hotel from dinner when she suggested that they visit Guguletu township.

&quot;Anni grew up in Sweden, and she felt as if the area around this hotel was just like at home: so clean and safe, and maybe a bit sterile,&quot; he said. &quot;She had never been to Africa before, so she suggested that we should have a look at the real Africa.

&quot;The stop was on the way back here and was intended so that we could experience a township,&quot; he said. &quot;We were barely in the Guguletu township when the attack happened.&quot;

After the killing, Dewani hired a high-profile British publicist, Max Clifford, to handle his affairs. Clifford said Tuesday that the accusations were ludicrous and denied that Dewani played any part in the killing. The publicist told the Daily Mail that Tongo was &quot;just trying to save his own skin.&quot;

The Dewanis were married in October in Mumbai, India. Their honeymoon began with several days in South Africa's Kruger National Park. In Tongo's confession, read to the court, the driver said he picked up the couple on Nov. 12 at Cape Town International Airport and drove them to a luxury hotel.

&quot;After we arrived at the hotel, Shrien Dewani approached me alone and asked me if I knew anyone that could 'have a client of his taken off the scene,' &quot; the statement said. &quot;After some discussion with him, I understood that he wanted someone, a woman, killed.

&quot;He said he was willing to pay an amount of 15,000 rand [about $2,200]. Shrien Dewani said he had U.S. dollars and could pay in U.S. dollars.&quot;

According to Tongo's statement, a friend put the driver in touch with Xolile Mngeni, 23, and Mziwamadoda Qwabe, 25, who have been charged with the killing. Tongo said he met the pair Nov. 13 to work out the details.

&quot;We agreed that Shrien Dewani and I would be ejected from the vehicle and that the female occupant had to be killed.&quot;

As part of his plea bargain, Tongo will testify against Mngeni and Qwabe.

In court Tuesday, Anni Dewani's father, Vinod Hindocha, fought to control his emotions. Leaving the courtroom, he thanked South Africans for their support and people around the world for their condolence messages through e-mail, Facebook and other venues.
