Investigations are on in earnest on Thursday morning after the destruction by fire of a more than 200 year old church in St. James.The police believe the early morning incident may have been an act of sacrilege.The Georgian style Mount Carey Baptist Church was destroyed during the wee hours of Thursday morning.According to Deputy Superintendent in charge of the St. James Fire Department Lloyd Scott, they received the fire call about 2:35.He says three units responded but when they got to the hillside church it was engulfed in flames.He says up to minutes after five o'clock firefighters were still carrying out cooling down operations.However, the church, a multipurpose hall and Basic School were gutted.While investigators have not ascertained the cause of the fire, sacrilege has not been ruled out.Police say the facility has been targetted in recent months by criminals.The building which underwent extensive renovation in 1965 was partially insured.
