Just stumbled onto this, very interesting, it is true that rastas are considered "weird" (outside the norm) in Africa in general, especially the dreadlocks, am horrified tho by some of the comments! And some of them are great!

Yes some of the comments are, well, I wouldn't say I'm horrified, more surprised.

I am not really surprised, some of the negative comments spring from a lack of knowledge and ignorance, rastas have had a bad press because there are many wanabes out there who grow locks and parade themselves as rasta but still indulge in other forms of violence or misdeeds,...true rastas not only talk the talk, they walk the walk.

Yeah man, Growing in Mbare, Harare Zimbabwe was really tough. Worse being a dreadlocks man, which most people nowadays call Rasta. In most cases a Rastaman is seen as a dirty person, uneducated and ganja smoking person especially in Urban areas. In the rural areas a person with dreadlocks was seen to be a traditional healer, and a lot of kids are usually scared by the looks of traditional healers. So, anytime they see a Dreadlocks man they would run away calling them names. In Africa, a lot people don't really understand the difference between a Rastaman and a Dreadlocks man. Its complicated !!!!
Same everywhere, not just in Africa!

Re: Are Rastas misunderstood in Africa?
ridiculously over-simplified article...
i won't even address the comments...
"rastas" are not a monolith in africa or anywhere else on earth...
the power-brokers' news presses & hollyweird movies are able to fashion the general population's minds the way they want...
but plenty of people are still sensible

Dreadlocks are associated with lunatics and here in Kenya we associate them with outlawed sects like Mungiki.
Kenyan lady in my office just said the Mungiki used to rob and kill and her friends cut off their dreadlocks because the police would pick you up just for having them.

Re: Are Rastas misunderstood in Africa?
A start would be to eliminate the term Dread-Locks. It has been a contradiction since the late 60's. The two was never meant to go together. One conveys spiritual, and the other, fear. One believed in crime, the other in living a biblical based, harmonious life with nature.
