This letter to the gleaner editor express my sentiment exactly on this issue.Bleaching in Jamaica is more than skin deep,misguide as it may seems this is a physiological response to a society that value European features over African features.I am pleasantly surprised that the gleaner opted to publish the following letter.I am aware that inconvenient truths like these make some Jamaicans uncomfortable.But that will not lead me to adopt the ways of the ostrich and bury my head in the sand like some of us are prone to do.




&quot;It would be laughable if it were not so pathetic, and now the Government is getting involved in trying to put a stop to this ridiculous practice of lightening the skin. I think the cause of this potentially destructive, yet widely practised foolishness needs visiting before we pursue wholesale criticism.

<span style="color: #CC0000">People want to look like the 'successful' segment of society. It is widely believed that light skin is the model of what it takes to get ahead in society and business. Looking at a line-up of the Jamaican (and I dear say, West Indian) political leaders and many of the captains of business in our region, one sees an array of light-skinned persons. There is no doubt that lighter-skinned people have some advantage</span>.<span style="font-size: 14pt"> They are a minority who are in the majority when it comes to money and privilege, so what should you expect from the underprivileged dark-skinned masses?</span>

The children of a lighter hue became members of a privileged sector and were afforded opportunities not available to the black masses. The colonial stratification, which imposed classification by colour, indelibly stamped it on the psyche of the masses that the door was closed to them, and it has proven an insurmountable barrier for the majority of them.

In immediate post-emancipation society, one of the determinants in being near the top of the class structure on the island was shade of colour. In the minds of many, colour supersedes education as the lighter the skin, the greater possibility of privilege. It was widely known that the gaining of coveted employment opportunity in the civil service, or in the private business sector in the early days, was restricted to light-skinned persons.

<span style="font-size: 14pt">Over the years, it was the brown man that owned the store, the farm and the factory. They worked in the bank and had the coveted positions where it really mattered. They were the lawyers and the doctors and the politicians. Some of this was largely determined by the colonials who instituted a colour code to discourage miscegenation, and <span style="text-decoration: underline"><span style="color: #990000">not much has changed to this day</span></span></span>. I am convinced that 'browning' is a direct outgrowth of the inequities experienced by the masses at the hands of the privileged in the past, and this present society, in engaging in skin-bleaching, is expressing a resistance at being branded as dark-skinned&quot;

Good letter.

It is a global phenomenon; both the implied privelege of light skin and the phenomenon of bleaching.
The simple fact is that the civilization that we are a part of is racist and its process of expansion and growth was rationalized by racist ideologies.
There was a tremendous amount of brutality involved in the genocide of native Americans, African slavery, Worldwide colonization etc. and those actions needed to be lubricated by propaganda.

However, while the actions are in the past, the propaganda lives on to various degrees and is communicated to us by examples, media, and the attitudes of others.
These messages are so ubiquitous so as to be invisible, ignored as a mere fact of life.
Still, we 'know' that white is beautiful, blacks are uncivilized, Native Americans are dangerous cannibals though none of us took a course in these things.

Now, when you're one of the badly spoken of 'others' you must reach a personal impasse.
There must be a struggle between acceptance of the messages and self-hate or rejection and self-love.
I think a fair number of people end up with a degree of self-loathing but I really can't 'blame' them.
If it's better to be whiter and you want to be better you'll want to be whiter; 'dry head' tun straight, black skin tun white.

This is the same reason why white people will harbor various racist prejudices against non-white people even when some of them don't want to.
They are bombarded by the same messages WITHOUT the counterexample of their own personal existence in &quot;other&quot; skin.
If black people can be made to hate themselves you'll understand how ludicrous it is to assume that the average white person isn't racist to some degree.
That's why a former white coworker who was quite pleasant to be around could 'compliment' me by saying that he likes Jamaicans because they show initiative unlike those other 3rd world people.

So those that claim bleaching is just a 'fashion choice' are making excuses to avoid claims that they have unfashionable self-hate.
It's the same reason Michael Jackson had a version of vitiligo that destroys noses, straightens hair, and has fair-skinned children.
It is never 'just fashion' since fashion always has aims to portay an image of success, sexual appeal, athleticism, youth, or individualism.
The real reason for the bleaching (and weave) 'fashion trend' is this civilization's racial ideologies and its effects.

Dude — Now, see, we don’t have lights here like they do in the photo, so you look more normal here. We don’t have lights like that… (chick is chiming in agreeing)
Sammy — No, no, not at all…it’s sort of like having a really strong “flash” from a camera on top of the lights…it’s too much.
(some back and forth between him and the chick I don’t fully understand, about Sammy always being in the light or something; Sammy is very amused by his own joke, but no one else laughs)
Dude —<span style="font-weight: bold"> So you look lighter than before, and it’s from this cream…..it’s a European cream? Where did you buy it?
Sammy — Yeah, in Europe</span>….(then they go off on a back and forth about where he found it, how he uses it, and the before and after)
Chick — does your wife use it?
Sammy — No, because she’s blonde
Chick — so this is only for dark people, brunettes.
Sammy — Exactly. It does a little, <span style="font-weight: bold">but can’t help people with light skin already.</span>
Chick — does it clear up your skin, does it lighten it, does it change the consistency, what does it do?
Sammy —<span style="font-weight: bold"> It does it all. For darker people, it’s great.</span>
Chick — Have you seen anyone else using this?
Sammy — I haven’t seen anyone else. But the same affect it had on me, it would on another person.
Dude — So lemme get this straight: you didn’t have the same problem as Michael Jackson?
Sammy — Nooo! I’m great!
Dude — I ask because some people are worried about you…
Sammy — Nope, nothing to worry about…thank you, but I feel fine. I feel at peace, I’m in good health. I don’t have any problem. I can see why some people might think that, even dial 911…but (laughing) i’m all good.
Chick — So how long have you been using the cream, how long does this process take?
Sammy — About 2 months.

Then Dude goes off about some doctor in Beverly Hills or something.
Then it cuts to the end, where they basically wish Sammy a happy birthday (that’s why he’s on the show), thank him for coming on his birthday, and get one last closeup of the face. Chick says: “He’s white, white, white!!!”
