A friend has a death in the family. Tragic, her brother died in his 30's leaving behind a son less than one year old.

The family requested, in lieu of flowers all donations go to an account in his infant son's name.

I have never seen this before. They live in the country in Georgia (if that is significant)

Really? A di fuss me a experience this.

I have never met her brother. But she and I have been buddies for a while. I guess I can send a check? THey only give the wife's (widow) address. Do I send the check to my friend?

This is quite common practice nowadays but that doesn't make it proper. IMHO I think it is tacky even under these tragic circumstances. Sorry about your friend, Pepper

I think asking for financial help should not be part of the death announcement. It can be done more discretely, say, when someone asks &quot;What can we do?&quot; the family can suggest giving to the child's fund.

Not close enough that I would travel to Georgia to attend the services. But I would send her a card, and would have considered flowers or some other gift basket. I never met her brother, so it would never dawn on me to send his child a check. *sigh*

send the $ equivalent. it doesn't sound like flowers is what is needed now. I think it's practical rather than tacky
