u can vouch for this bring credible SisterD....if u can n know that the doctor has signed on etc, the funds going to someone reputable etc who immediately pays it to the doctors etc.., let me know...

would love to see Jamaicans.com adopt a family like dis an go down fi a two weeks n do a Habitat ting....it would seem enuff about wid varying skills fi i build a nice board house

Since the report was aired, they have apparently spoken to the hospital and Dr Taylor has agreed to the surgery. The two female officers and the third woman have said they would accompany Geeta to Kingston and help her through the time her little one is in the hospital.

I agree... there are enough people (from this site alone) going to JA over the next two months that could donate a little time and skills to improve on this family's home. Imagine if 15-20 people could set aside a couple days, purchase local supplies and renovate.... Perhaps like Astons mom years ago, Geeta may have a skill that could be developed /assisted that she could earn regular money from. No word if she has proper care for her diabetes either.

A few 'acquaintenances' here are starting a collection to pay the current tuition to the local school directly, amongst other things like providing supplies. We just sent down a good inventory of school supplies to a school in Spanish Town.

ETA The way the info given to me was worded, it <span style="font-style: italic">implied </span>the medical services were 'donated' however, I will try find out more specifics.</span>

SistahD, not wasting ur time but i have become more proactive wen it comes to doing things in Ja...last weekend my sister`s schoolmate and a fellow doctor visited...she is a pediatrician in Kingston...say to show i have contact with doctors on the ground to check on doctors named in newsreports and cost n quality of care the reports say r needed etc...u want to make sure the doctor is qualified..i know it seems hard to say the ill has to continue to suffer wile u mek sure but if the monies an the care dont go to the party hurt or be the curative , respectively, well u bak at square one

now there is a listing of doctors in ja so would love to know this doc`s name to check speciality etc..that is just the start of providing care for the child n then tackle help for the family...going bak to substandard housing post operative is not advisable...

Updates on Little Miss of Spalding

<span style="font-size: 14pt"><span style="font-weight: bold"><span style="color: #990000">Community Response to Little Miss in Spalding, Jamaica: Help Needed!!!</span></span>

On January 8, 2011 we were informed through Jamaican media of the dire living conditions and medical problems involving an unemployed single mother and the three youngest of her eight children.

Thanks to the Community Policing efforts of the Spalding Police during a routine check through Moravia, this family has been blessed with an enormous support and caring from an awesome community.

Within 24 hours of the above news report airing, many local community members as well as others across Jamaica descended upon Geeta's home or contacted the Spalding Police to deliver food and household supplies, clothing, etc. The RGD registered the three youngest children and Food for the Poor announced they would provide a new home (to be located on Geeta's fathers' property nearby). The Red Cross also came through to assist the family.

On January 10, TVJ aired update segments (as well as local contact confirmations) including that Dr Hamilton from Bustamante Childrens Hospital in Kingston had agreed to perform the much needed corrective surgery for the youngest child known as 'Little Miss' , as early as January 18. Little Miss was born with a cleft palette, her speech and developing self esteem are greatly affected, and would have made attending school uncomfortable.

Geeta and Little Miss will need to travel from Moravia to Kingston on the 17th January in advance of the surgery. Accommodations are needed for at least three nights, as well as food expense and local transportation to and from the hospital / hotel. These arrangements have been made, coordinated through the Community Police Officers and Marcia Walker of Food for the Poor, Jamaica. Understandably, these needs add a financial burden and this is where we reach out to the community at large to help where possible. Through a collective group of concerned individuals as well as the cooperation of www.jamaicans.com and in conjunction with Food for the Poor we humbly ask for assistance to help this family in a sincere, unselfish manner. The overall expense is approximately $30,000 JA$ for the transportation and food expense during the stay in Kingston, and the hotel costs is a similar amount (total $650 - 700 US$)

<span style="font-size: 11pt">Hi evan, it took a little longer to arrange (do the research, collect pricing, etc) and we are all working at different schedules (between Jamaica, Canada and US) so was awkward to connect 'timewise'. We also wanted to consider factors to not overwhelm Geeta and Little Miss (big difference between their current surroundings and the streets of Kingston, as well as the emotions and anticipation of surgery for a small child).

Spalding Police gave Beverly (one of the officers in the first video) a few days off to accompany Geeta with Marcia from Food for the Poor, to help her through the process over the coming days. Also needed FFTP to set up a specific account for this, and DoJamaicaYourWay.com checked out and secured reasonable, comfortable and convenient accommodations.where they will be able to handle their own meals when needed.

Looks like this has turned into a wonderful 'caring circle'.</span>

She will also keep us updated as to donation volume. Marcia has also spoken with the selected hotel to confirm booking starting tomorrow (Monday) as Little Miss must be at the hospital Monday afternoon.
