Eida dem use all di holidays, or wan ah di odda President's Holiday. Why single out di di only public legal holiday fi ah non-Caucasian?

Two northern Georgia school systems which are 90% white intended to use today as one snow makeup day for the 10 snow days they had missed. Some civil rights organizations rode them like a two cent hoe because King is from here and found it disrespectful. Also, the gov't agencies (post office, etc.) were still observing the holiday.

Turns out their roads were so icy that they had to take today off still.

I don't have enough info to determine whether I think it was some sort of blatant racism. Would other holidays be used as well to make up the 10 days?

I was in school before and after the holiday was recognized. I thought South Carolina was the last hold out but turns out it was either Arizona or Arkansas I think.

One thing I really want to know is this. How are schools in the north and midwest getting by? Let's just use Massachusetts and Michigan as examples. It seems that they don't even start school until after Labor Day and are out by June 1st. Do they make up snow days? Georgia has the lowest national test scores in the nation and start school before August hardly gets in good.

I think the focus needs to be on what other than serving time in a classroom is lacking..

NJ has 180 school days. It is normal for school districts to automatically build in a few snow days into the calendar. Ours builds 3 school days into the calendar. This year we used one of our snow days. If we go beyond the 3 days, days are taken away from spring break or are added at the end of the school year.

I would think other school districts do the same.

Now as for taking away the only holiday that is for a non caucasian American fi dat They have a spring break and the end of the school year to add on to

Midwest (MI) gets the day off. The State plans many many private and public events commemorating the MLK birthday, and many parents use the day off to take and expose their kids to the legacy of MLK.

That's what I'm asking. If Georgia (specifically) has more school days then it's not doing a frig for education or else the students would be able to compete.

georgia prolly has the 180 days but build in a few snow days.. eg

At any rate, back when it was in legislation and not an actual holiday, we simply didn't show up.

It doesn't seem like it was that long ago but when they said the 25th year, I wanted to scream. I'm concerned I tell ya. I'm that old!

(And just to not make it sound so ancient, it's not like I was a senior in hs when we sat out lol.)

Hmm. Dekalb County would implode before they didn't recognize MLK Jrs day.

Well, I try to make sure nothing is coming around to nip me in the arse before I proclaim disrespect. Funny thing is most working people wouldn't care what holiday go them a day off from work. I know some black people for sure who wouldn't care if we had David Duke day in theory in private if not in practice in public.

The northern schools seem to begin school after and end school before the southern schools so I don't know what a difference a few snow days forgiven would matter.

One last thing...after we got the MLK Jr. holiday in my home town, they also pushed through Washington and Lincoln's bdays in Feb in addition to the days we already got for Mardi Gras. No vote, no nothing.

Tulip the northern schools start after the southern schools and end after the souhern schools

day after labor day (usually) and around the last day in June -more specific hours for the year dictated by teachers union (up this way)

maybe Michigan is an exception

Well mi gwine talk di truth, as far as mi concern, dem coulda well keep school.
It's a shame, but most of di pikney (ahn dem parents for that matter) use the day to sleep in or shop.
Dem nu interested in MLK (or any of the other &quot;people&quot; holidays) them get the day off fram school to commemorate.
Come June when winter clothing come off...wi will see what nuff ah di gyal pikney use today to do.
