DETROIT (WXYZ) - A woman coming into the United States across the Ambassador Bridge is at the center of a federal lawsuit tonight.
46-year-old Interior Designer Loretta Van Beek from Stratford, Ontario says she was stopped, questioned for two hours, strip searched and groped by two female customs and border protection agents because she was bringing raspberries into the country and failed to disclose it.
According to the suit, Van Beek was taken into a windowless room where one agent groped her breasts aggressively and then told Van Beek she was about to “get intimate” and then she aggressively searched her genital area through her underwear, while the other agent watched. She was then released and sent back to Canada.
The woman's lawyer says it was so traumatic and a violation of the fourth amendment which protects people against unreasonable search and seizure.
A spokesperson for customs and border protection said they could not comment because of the ongoing litlgation.
There is no word on what, if any discipline could be handed out against the agents.
