One more reseller of cheap Chinese made goods descends upon Jamaica.

There was a time when a significant proportion of the affordable shoes that were being sold in Jamaica were also <span style="font-style: italic">made</span> in Jamaica. Payless will reduce the chances of that ever happening again to zero.

Ah, the benefits to mankind of capitalism.

All the Jamaican shoemakers have to do to compete is pay whatever it is the Chinese workers get for making their shoes; 500 Jamaican a day or so and they'll get all that business back.

So it goes with a competitive economic system.

And you can't really complain when most Jamaicans and most Americans for that matter prefer capitalism even in the new globalized version.

Look how many millionaires and billionaires it has created. It must be a good thing.

Okay maybe none of the out-of-work Jamaican shoemakers can afford even those cheaper Chinese shoes but we all know that capitalism isn't perfect but it IS what we all want.

Isn't it.

The attack on the shoemaker in this story only appears to be a random act of violence. Just think how many more attacks like this will now be averted with the coming of Payless and cheap Chinese shoes.

In this case it because Jamaica did not pursue Capitalism and instead destroyed our economy with all kinds of wild experiments that we could not maintain local manufacturing and sales.

In any case from what I have observed the Jamaican Culture has changed radically and it unlikely that local designs would satisfy Jamaica, unless the State intervenes and restrict Big Box Chain Stores coming from the outside.

But give them 2 years. Payless will be gone, for while Jamaicans might like import they may not necessarily like to buy from Payless when the other retailers copy Payless style and inventory.

Jamaica even if it wanted to, could not compete with China anymore than can Mexico or the United States or any other place that has higher wages

Payless will do well anywhere that their prices are lower than the other shoe stores.

Poor people cannot afford the loyalty to goods made by their countrymen and just as Walmart and Home Depot drive out small local retailers and Chinese goods drive out American goods within these stores, less expensive goods even when of inferior quality will always sell better to people who can barely afford even the cheaper goods.

Neither Jamaica nor many other Third World, heavily indebted, underdeveloped and neo-colonialized country can compete in todays so-called free market economies.

Capitalism in today's world consists of a race to the bottom.

Would you work for US$20.00 a week for drudge work in a factory ?.

You cannot blame even the Jamaican government for trying what they thought might have worked to pull Jamaica up.

Jamaicans have been led to believe that they don't want socialism and all the evidence of the past and the experiences of all other poor Third World countries AND the state of globalization proves that they cannot compete in the capitalist market.

It is not the fault of government . They support capitalism as do the people of Jamaica.

It is capitalism that has never worked to eliminate poverty, unemployment and under employment, insufficient educational opportunities, despair drug use, criminal gangs and all the rest of the things generated by long term intergenerational poverty.

You can only point to Singapore and a very few Third World exceptions where capitalism has done anything. Governments all over the world have tried just about everything to make capitalism work in their poor countries and nothing has worked because capitalism never could work in poor underdeveloped countries and with globalization making capitalism work in the Third World (Jamaica) is IMPOSSIBLE.

There is no government that can make capitalism work where it historically has not worked ..
Blaming government is only a way to divert attention away from the real cause of Jamaica's problems and away from what works.

It is a long slow downhill slide into much worse conditions for Jamaican and Third World societies as globalization runs the poor capitalist countries and their people into the ground .

How bad do things have to get before you and the Jamaican people see the obvious?

And if you think that just a change of government will change anything, watch what happens (or doesn't happen) in Tunisia and Egypt in the next few years.
