TSA heads to Jamaica to probe ‘cargo threat’
Officials of the United States Transport Safety Administration (TSA) are coming to Jamaica today following last night’s suspected cargo threat aboard an Air Jamaica flight from Kingston that landed in Fort Lauderdale.
Their visit also coincides with a 72-hour suspension of cargo leaving Jamaica destined for the US.
The suspension was imposed last night.
Head of the Jamaica Civil Aviation authority, lieutenant colonel Oscar Derby says the authorities are yet to determine the level of the threat.
He also says on their visit to Jamaica, the TSA will be looking at American carriers.
But colonel Derby says whatever measures they take would apply to all US-bound carriers.
Last night, there were anxious moments aboard Air Jamaica flight 037 after passengers were prevented for disembarking for more than 45 minutes because of a suspected cargo threat.
According to an Air Jamaica official, the flight which was heading from Kingston landed at the Hollywood International Airport around 9 o’clock.
And, he says on landing, the TSA raised an alarm that there was a cargo threat.
The Air Jamaica executive could not provide information on the nature of the suspected ‘cargo threat’.
But he says after almost an hour combing through the luggage on board, the TSA authorities gave the all-clear for the passengers to disembark flight 037.
The plane later departed Fort Lauderdale for Kingston for its final flight for the night.
