Tourists robbed at knifepoint

Port Antonio, Portland:

The Portland police are investigating an incident in which two tourists were robbed at knifepoint on Sunday night, along Foreshore road in Port Antonio.

The incident took place shortly after 10 p.m, when two female visitors from Switzerland were reportedly walking along that thoroughfare.

According to the police, the women were pounced upon by a man riding a bicycle, who demanded money.

It is alleged that the man forced the women into a dark area and proceeded to rob them of an undetermined sum of money.

The police said that the man in making his getaway, hurled expletives at the visitors, and allegedly used his knife to cut one of the women on her left arm.

This is the second such incident in less than two weeks at the same location, as a female visitor to the island was previously robbed of her purse and personal belongings by a man, who was later picked up by the police.

The man is currently in custody at the Port Antonio station lock-up.

Dreaming, I hear you and understand what you are saying, but it has happened in the same area before and nothing was done by the authorities, the Tourist Board or Law Enforcement to prevent a <span style="font-weight: bold">repeat</span> of this criminal offence..

It's a damn shame, how are we gonna promote tourism in Jamaica if we cannot protect tourists from knife attacks and robberies?.. At least, there should be warnings in the hotels especially to women, advising them to stay clear of these areas after dark... I know!, it's unthinkable to do by some in the industry, because they would rather bury it than be up-front about it,

how r we going to provide for our citizens so as to reduce if not eradicate the feeling that thievery is the ongle way out...daily , citizens are robbed in a simlar vein....i say rob a few more tourist to the extent that the powers that be find that they have to start looking at the ills of Jamaica as they affect daily life n having corrected those , will then enjoy the spill over to the tourist sector

after all if people neva a rob as a matter of course, tourist would not be robbed...

n there is no press bak enuff fi stop who a go yaad ....people live by the maxim of not me..i tek precautions

Evanovitch,
Poverty, lack of living wage jobs, lack of educational opportunities underdevelopment of the country are at the base of Jamaica's crime problem.

Cuba is poorer on a per capita basis but has the lowest crime rate in the hemisphere because of the type of economy they have.

Sorry to say but there is no cure for Jamaica's problems under capitalism and just changing which party holds the government cannot create the change that is needed.

You cannot reform capitalism into being the instrument through which Jamaica can rise.

No matter how &quot;safe&quot; I hear Zurich is, I would not walk around late at night if I were there on holiday.

you may have a point...

only when it hits their bread &amp; butter will they pay attention;

but the gov't of Ja is completely unable or unwilling (or both) to tackle the issues which produces criminal culture;
they are not an independent gov't anyway

Unfortunately, what will probable happen is, di Government /Police will focus dem attention in di Tourist areas protecting di Visitors, while di regular smaddi an old people dem inna di neighbourhood still ah get robbed an killed.

true dat but changes in the MI giving people allllllll ovah the idea that change CAN be achieved if the POPULACE REACH A BREAKING POINT...

wat i am wondering is wat will be that point in the Caribbean...n check seh mi no seh juss yaad alone cause di said classism/ racism abound....we have gone from an educated and educating society to one whose sole focus is channelling their people into service industries

i have been asking fi the figures to show dis..fi real...everybody mek money awf foreign currencies...even di remittance , di peeps get shortchanged....dem neva get the real value of the currency...oddas mek money twice ovah..dem charge fi it send an mek money wid di difference between wat is paid out n wat is given once dem hit di bank wid di farrin currency dem collek

again i say it is riduculous fi a nation count remittancce as pawt of their GDP...it is a sign of having given up on the people dem fi represent n putting emphasis on income dat is iffy n goes nowhere really...
