I beg to differ.
Jamaica got its nominal independence in 1960 but kept the twin pillars of corrupt colonial rule: a corrupted multi-party electoral system and capitalism. Each one enforces the other and it is the basis for Jamaica's problems.

The systems run Jamaicans from the top down.
The Jamaican people do not run things.
Those things are what control and run Jamaicans.
It would require a democracy for the Jamaican people to run things and democracy does not exist in Jamaica in either the electoral or economic spheres.

Jamaican society is not moving upward as witness the rise in power of the gangs, crime, violence, corruption through all levels of the the society and as in the rest of the world the rapid acceleration of the few rich getting richer and the many poor getting poorer.
