NORTH MIAMI, Fla. (WSVN) -- A mother has been left outraged after her son's progress report was pinned to his shirt at school.
A teacher's account of one child's behavior was made extremely public at WJ Bryan Elementary in North Miami. "At the time I got into the classroom, the kids started laughing at me," recalled 7-year-old Joshua.
Now the child's mother is giving the school an "F" for how they handled this situation. "She could have called me," said Rose Innocent. "We have our number in the school system. "She could have called me, she could have called my husband, to say, 'OK, well, your son has been misbehaving in school, talk to him when he gets home,' but not humiliate him."
Last week, his mother said, a teacher at the school stapled a "poor" progress report to his T-shirt. "This is the shirt saying that his behavior was poor, he wasn't doing his work, the quality of the work was poor," said Innocent, as she pointed to the note.
Joshua explained, "She got me in the office to get a stapler, to staple the note on my shirt."
The Miami-Dade School District said that the mother actually asked the school to send progress reports home with her child, but the reports were not making it home. That was when the teacher decided to staple the report to the child's shirt.
The district released a statement explaining that the teacher did take steps to hide the note from other students. "To make sure that the note reached home, the teacher fastened the note to the child's shirt then placed the child's sweatshirt over it, so that the note would not cause any undue attention," said John Schuster, Miami-Dade Schools spokesperson, via the statement.
Joshua's mother said other students clearly saw the progress report, leaving her son traumatized. "I don't even want to get one step in the classroom when I go to the school," Joshua said.
As for other parents, they think there may have been a better way to handle this. "What about stapling it to the outside of the backpack?" suggested one parent outside the school.
The district said, the principal has talked to the teacher about other ways to handle this situation.
